It was built in 1962-1967 by Tsolak Hakoby Gevorgyan. The area is 7.9 square kilometers, the total volume is 91 million cubic meters, the utility is 81 million cubic meters, the water capacity is 18 cubic meters per second. The reservoir dam is earthen, 50 m high and 200 m long.It feeds on the atmospheric precipitation of Kasagh river, Lusagyugh, Vardenis, Ttujur, Yeghipatrush, Kuchak rivers. It freezes in winter. Used for irrigation. The water is supplied to the former Ashtarak and Etchmiadzin regions. The main fish species of the reservoir is the local koghak. The prince of Lake Sana, the whitefish, was bred here. In recent years, crayfish have been bred here. Recreation zones have been built in the vicinity. The villages of Kasagh and Zovuni remained under the waters of the reservoir, the inhabitants of which were resettled in the vicinity of Yerevan.In 1967, the small churches of Surb Vardan and Tukh Manuk, built in the 5th century, were removed from the water border in the former village of Zovuni and moved to a safe place. The Poghos-Petros basilica, built in the 4th century, remains in the water area for 3-4 months a year.
