This is a really iconic museum. I learned a lot after coming here. There are all kinds of antiques and art works. There are many skeletons of different animals and human beings. There are actual bodies of animals. This place is stunning. You must visit this beautiful place.
The place where it is situated is very good, you can see lot of peacock and peahens roaming in the campus, it was amazing to see them roaming. Lot of greenery around.Looked like a mini forest. The museum is situated almost in middle of forest. The entrance gate is right opposite to public library.Children would love to go around this museum. They have preserved lot of animals there.First floor is totally filled with timber pieces and few miniature dams and bridges.
A very useful visit.Educative.Innovative.Refreshing.Good effort.Gives a sense of being with realistic animals. To have a pleasant and relaxing time, a must go!
Nice place to take the kids and show them. Neatly displayed and explained about animals, birds, insects, reptiles, skeletons, nuts and plants, oils, stones, plant gums, woods, weapons, house & bridge models and so on. Maintained by central government forest department.Google map shows wrong direction. It is 3rd left in Cowley brown road (coming from Lawley road).Timings: 9 to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pmFor children under 5 - no chargesFor children above 5 years - rs.20/-Adults - rs.40/-
Museum campus is very unclean and we can see lot of empty liquor bottles. They have huge amount of animal skeletons, old wood samples, tribal arnamants and rare weapons. Thats great and very rare collections. But the guides/staffs need to get at least minimum knowledge about these collections. They are collecting Rs 40 for adult and 20 for above age 5. But it seems not worth. We need go and call the staff and ask about every boxes. They are not ready to explain anything. If you have knowledge about zoolaogy, then its great place for you.I have shared some surrounding area of the museum. They need to improve in all.

A really good place to take kids.. Helps them know more about the animals n c their originality.. Even though lifeless, they appear to be real. It is a unique museum... One of its kind.. More than a century old.. Renovated completely.. in this summer season it is too difficult to roam for a long time with kids inside.. In wooden and glass display cases we find a huge amount of birds and other creatures, with lighting available simply by pressing a button. Very useful informative and more passionate.

Must visit place
If you are in Coimbatore, this is a must place to visit. This museum takes you back into history featuring the life cycle of Birds and some Animals. Very well maintained by Central Government Staff. On discussion with the staff they highlighted that, one of the Butterfly species attracts fungus and if not maintained its feathers will become powder. A family visit will be fun filled for kids. There are plenty of peacocks around the building and is a sight to behold.
Awesome Musuem I have visited as of now..Its will take solid 1 hour to look all of it..Entrance for adult is 40 Rs eachChildren is 20 Rs each..You will come to know about many types of Tress as well as large collection Birds and animals..Nice service support from the people out there..It has even fantastic front view..There are two floors here.. right place to come with family..
This is one of the underrated and least known museums of India. Not many know about this place, even those from Coimbatore city. I really appreciate the museum authorities who have maintained this site and very well preserved all the artefacts. Here, you can see different varieties of wild animals, birds, reptiles, insects, etc. Though the museum is not big in size, but it requires around 45-60 minutes to see all it peacefully. Photography is allowed here and you can take some fantastic pictures here. One thing to note is that the museum is located inside the Forest Campus and so it is little inside. Keep following the sign boards or you can ask people present inside.
Awesome place with preserved specimens of dead plants, animals, birds and various types of oils, woods, food items, minerals, sand... Really awesome experience. I loved it 🖤❤️
It is really a wonderful place to see varieties of animals, birds, butterflies, guns and woods in the museum. It will be helpful for biology students. This museum is located at the centre of forest. Its a pleasant place to spend time. The entry price for adult is ₹40, for Children ₹20 and for foreigners ₹200 charging. Sunday will be closed.
Gass Forest Museum is a government run natural history museum situated at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.Toward the end of the 19th century, an aborted attempt was made by J. A. Gamble, the conservator of forests for Madras Presidency, to establish a forest museum in the province. A few years later in 1902, Gambles successor as Conservator of Forests Horace Arichibald Gass succeeded in establishing a museum for forestry. It was opened to the public 15 April 1902 by Baron Ampthill, the then Governor of Madras, at that point simply referred to as the Forest Museum at Coimbatore. When Gass, the first curator, retired in 1905, his successor F. A. Lodge renamed the museum in his honor. It was expanded in 1905 and 1915. In 1912, the Madras Forestry College (currently the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy) was established in the museum grounds to train foresters. During 1942-47, the museum was closed and the buildings used as shelters for World War II evacuees from Malta and Greece. After Indian Independence in 1947, the museum came under the administration Government of Tamil Nadu. It is currently run by the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), which is situated in the same campus. The museum was reopened for public on May 1, 2015 after carrying out renovation works. A 3D diorama depicting wildlife in its natural habitat has been added. The museum is situated in the Forest College Campus, situated on Cowley Brown Road in the heart of Coimbatore city. The campus also houses other institutions like the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy (TNFA), the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFoS) and other offices of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
This is one of the beautiful museums I have ever seen . This museum has all exhibits related to forest including some woods of all varieties which I have never seen anywhere. There was an exhibit of very big teak wood which is more than 450 years old. Each exhibit is unique in nature. A must visit for everyone. Incidentally, it is in the heart of the city.
India’s biggest forest museum in Coimbatore
This a place where students can learn many interesting thing.Great place.
We didnt expect this place to impress us.. but boy!! It did more than impress us.. interesting place and objects to see and things to learn, so much in relatively little space... Our time flew in Gass forest museum
This Museum is situated near government college of technology Coimbatore. This was recently renovated. The exhibits for well maintained and of high standard. They dont allow any water bottle inside the Museum while you visit. You need to walk a lot so be prepared for that. Do visit this Museum at least once for sure if you are a Biology student. It is interesting for the public also.
Nice collection. Heritage site. I was impressed by an idea of chronicling the historical events happened in india and the age of the tree was about 400 years. They were describing the events in the rings of the stem which depicts the year the tree passes. Regretted why I have not taken the photography.
One should definitely visit the Museum. Very well maintained. Thanks to forest college.
Very good place for forest animals and national equipment items. Very useful for young children and study peoples. 100yrs old woods, animal bons lots of small birds there.
Very good place. So many important animals and birds details available. Must visit. To provide ventilation and air conditioning.
Its a nice place for kids to visit.. wonderful collection and its surprising to know the entire/99% of the collection is from one person named Gass. Kids will love it. Since its inside the forest campus you experience the feel of being in a forest. you can see peacocks around.
Quite an enjoyable experience awaits adults and children alike at this museum of natural history of India. The building itself and the grounds are an experience in yesteryear, though the location is right in the heart of Coimbatore. The small entry fee is a bargain. In the tall, spacious central display area, wild animals prowl in a 3D diorama, appearing so alive that you might draw back upon first glance. They are amazing examples of the fine craft of taxidermy. In wooden and glass display cases you find a huge amount of birds and other creatures, with lighting available simply by pressing a button.Benches are available for sitting outside on the pleasant grounds, perhaps to reflect on what youve seen and learned inside the museum.I found it inspiring to learn a little about the museums origin, as its all too easy to take such places for granted and overlook the hard work that goes into bringing them about. Opened in 1902, the museum was named to honor a British conservator of forests who passionately took forward an earlier attempt to set up a forest museum in what was then Madras Presidency. Later, a forestry college, now the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy, was set up on the grounds to train foresters. The museum has an interesting connection with World War II, as it was closed for 5 years so that its buildings could serve to shelter a number of evacuees.
The museum is maintained by the central government. The museum is comparatively small to other museum. Overall its a worth visit with the kids. The entry fee is 40 rupees for adult. The place is a peaceful place and they do have seats to sit
It is a good place for people from Coimbatore to visit. Its a place where many people donot know it exists. The entry fee is cheap. It has info about local wildlife and plantations. Its definitely worth a visit.
Knowledge place. Where you can learn many things. Even every family can visit this spot with their kids. The kids can gain more knowledge in this spot. I request everyone to take their camera and rough note to make a note of everything and share it with everyone .
A hidden gem in Coimbatore! A very well maintained musuem and with excellent artifacts. One could spend at least 2 hours here to observe all the specimens. Since photography is allowed, you can take some great pics of animals (stuffed!)The building which houses the museum is from the British era (I believe) and is a treat for someone who is intrested in observing the architecture from the past. The staff regularly remind vistors to maintain silence and not to touch the exhibits, but alas some of the visitors dont seem to understand.
Nice place to visit
Located in the town near RS Puram and so much to see. It will give us a feel of being in a real forest.
Pls All Are Must Visit This museum

Amazing forest museum. If you are a wildlife lover and you wanted to know more about wildlife.. must visit this forest museum
Good collection of exhibits and pleasant environment. I liked the part where it was shown what are various kinds of woods and other forest treasures (fibres, minerals, tars, lacs) used for.
An old museum to kill time with knowledge about wood, oil, animals and old culture!!
One of the very nice place to see in Coimbatore. And so much rare things are there to see.
Very well organised...informative
U can see all the wild animals in one place..
A little bit far away from the main road but worth the effort. Take a taxi or auto n ask the driver to drop you near the museum n not on the main road. Its located 0.7 to 1 km from the main road into the forest office.
This place having good collection of old things and animal bodies etc...the current charges 40 rupies per head...cost worthy museum there in middle of Coimbatore city...
Wonderful Memories... Most important and visit this place.. and all Childers must watch
Largest of its kind in India, it was established in 1902 by Horace Archibald Gass, a British forest officer. It was moved to the present building in 1915. They have a huge collection of animal specimens, especially birds and plant seeds, timber, different rock formations, ethnography, etc. Cant miss it if youre visiting Coimbatore.
