A great place of historical importance. Open from 7am to 6pm. Entry is free. Ample parking space available which is free. The place is right in the centre of teh city, hence there would be plenty of traffic to deal with. The roads are not great either. The place is marvelous. Great place for morning or evening walks. Calm and serene. There is a cave, 2 temples and a lake here. Great place for a family picnic. You will find many couples also. A must visit place. Sunset view must not be missed.

Chandravalli is a pre-historic site near Chitradurga in Karnataka. The temple here is semi-lunar in shape, and is around 3km from Chitradurga. This area is a valley that is formed by three hills namely Chitradurga, Cholagudda and Kirabanakallu. Excavations reveal that this area was inhabited since Iron Age.

Guide fees is 250 well a little expensive for 10 min tour in the dark.* Weekends are swarmed with people, so if you can make it during a weekday nothing like it.* Bring your own vehicle..cannot rely on public transport.

Chandravalli is an archaeological site located in the Chitradurga district of the state of Karnataka, India.[1] The region is a valley formed by three hills, Chitradurga, Kirabanakallu and Jolagudda.[2] It is a semi-arid region with scrub vegetation with a stream running through it.[3] Excavations at Chandravalli have revealed earthen pots, painted bowls and coins of Indian dynasties like Vijayanagar, Satavahana and Hoysalas as well as denarii of Roman emperor Augustus Caesar and a coin of the Chinese Han dynasty Emperor Wu Ti belonging to 2nd Century BC.[2][4].Government should take measures to restore this site back to its original beauty. The paintings need to restored we need to ensure the building and caves be brought back to original condition. Stop the vandalism by people

Wow.....What a wonderful architecture is of this caves. The planning, design, construction in olden days way back more than 500 years earlier. ASI is failed to keep the place clean. There are no signage, which tell the importance of the place. Once again cleaning is missing. Public should help by not littering. Better to be in groups to visit here than lonely. Not advisable to roam single. There are chances of getting lost.

Good place to visit. This is of archeological interest, and people who follow culture and history will find this very interesting. If you are visiting for the first time better hire a guide. And make sure your phones have sufficient battery to switch on the torch for at least 15 mins or carry a flashlight. It is very dark in the caves and will require some light.Sometimes the guides may not cover the area behind the caves, where there is a giant rock split into two due to lightning. You can go there yourself and visit yourself.Sadly some local people have done some damage to this site in search of ancient treasure, but its not much. Thankfully Archeological Survey of India (ASI) takes care of this site.

Chandravalli cave temple is about 3 kms from Chitradurga.  This pre-historic site, which is semilunar in shape is located between 3 hills, Chitradurga, Cholagudda and Kirubanakallu. Excavations here have shown that this place was inhabited since Iron Age. Surrounded by hills with a lake in the middle, makes it a perfect picture. The cave is between two giant single rocks. One of these rocks also used for rock climbing. It is also called Ankali matt. It is named so because saints from Ankalagi, in Belgaum, came and meditated here. Apart from its religious importance the cave offers many hair rising stories. The whole cave looks like a well maintained accommodation for Sadhus of yesteryears. You cannot feel, in any stage that you are going down the earth. This is the cave where you can pass every entrance with your head straighten up, except for a few places. Surprisingly breeze welcomes you in the cave though a ray of light is rare to see. There are corridors to ensure the ventilation in the caves and you wonder at the amazing engineering that was done under huge boulders about 120 ft high, which is standing the test of time even today after couple of millenniums. These are underground caves where one gets around 80 feet down from ground level. Better to reach out to this place with a guide as you can easily get lost inside the caves, which has a different exit route. Completely dark at any time of the day, one has to carry a source of light like torch or candle while exploring the place. Caves though dark have outlets for ventilation and comprises of anything a math could have like a place of worship with Shiva linga, visitor room, rooms for Sadhus, shelves to keep belongings, carvings and paintings on the walls.Historians claim that it is an ancient archaeological site.  They found painted pottery and coins from the Shatavahana empire and pre historic period. There is also a rock inscription of king Mayurasharma, the founder of first Kannada dynasty Kadambas, dated back to 450 CE. The rock inscription can be traced in Bhairaweshwara temple which Chandravalli houses. It is said that cave was used as place for doing Samadhi by saints. The stone carvings indicate both the Hindu and the Buddhist influence. The paintings have been done using the vegetable colours and those colors are still preserved.

Place of historical importance. Good place to visit. Need courage too, as the caves are pitch dark inside, and it is always better to seek the help of a guide to enter the caves, who will explain the differentbsites inside the cave. You can fix the fees before entering, but its reasonable. There are beautiful carvinngs and painting inside the cave, many of them are damaged due to the lack of proper maintenance. Reach the site well in advance, entry closes at 5 pm, and from the site of parking your vehicle you need to walk about 10 minutes to reach the caves. There is a large lake, best to visit evening, after visiting the caves. There are lot of monkeys around but are harmless. There is apparently no entry fee either to cave or the lake..

ASI has to provide some lighting system desperately to improve the overall experience of the visitors of this ancient historic land of Chandravalli.

Pleasant place with a green pond on the rear side of the fort. Shiva temple under the huge boulder is amazing. Its intriguing how ancient people built those beautiful cave dwellings under those rocks to have safe heavens amidst the jungle. Those dwellings are well structured and artistically decorated with stone cqrvings and mortar designs. Its exciting to descend through the dark caves led by the torch bearing guide and explore those living rooms, kitchen, boardroom and even a secret meeting room inside. Intelligently built using natural rock formations as the main structure.

I am introducing to you some caves as ancient as the times of Buddha. Buddha instructed his disciples to do four month- penance during monsoon. Many of them who came southwards chose these caves of #Chandravalli ( close to present #Chitradurga, Karnataka). Many caves are interlinked going as deep as 80 feet, airy, but pitch dark. These caves below huge rocks are very cool, small tanks to collect seeping water, shelves to kep oil lamps and other things. Some unclear paintings are also visible . Archealogists have recovered from here coins of China and other countries also belonging to BC era. During later years ( 13th century)
