Wonderful to see, retains most of the architecture since 1847! Mother of all colleges in Madras! Not a tourist place, but serves still as an affordable college for all, & very close to the beach! Do visit of you like to visit alma mater of geniuses.

The place looks as if youre Inside a movie. With buildings like that of Hogwarts with spiral staircases, wooden floorboards that creak, old classrooms and vintage statues, the aesthetics are on point. However, you are likely to end up in trouble if you are not good in Tamil.

I thoroughly enjoyed studying psychology in Presidency College from 1975 to 1978. Presidency college used to be the one and only college in Chennai where men students were admitted to study psychology. Faculty members from the departments of English, Tamil, Psychology and Statistics were excellent. I learnt a lot from every one of them. I remember them always with gratitude.

Most prestigious collage in Chennai of my time! I am glad I was a student of Presidency College between 1957-1960. Chemistry honors . Those days only 13 students were accepted in this course under the prof. T.R. Govindachari. We were 13 students 7 are living now. I could come for higher studies to U.S because of my association with Presidency college. Those days they used to call aristrocats of Presidency. My great college! I was also secretary of chemical society between 1958-59! The experience I had in Presidency college still lingers! Must visit place if you are visiting Chennai!

As first Principal, the choice of Elphinstone fell on E. B. Powell, a University of Cambridge Wrangler in Mathematics, who accepted the post. Powell reached Mumbai (Bombay) on 20 September 1840 but did not arrive at Chennai (Madras) until 24 November, the journey from Bombay to Madras taking some four weeks. In the mean time, the Committee had invited a Mr Cooper, from the Hoogly College, Kolkata (Calcutta), to carry out the duties of Principal temporarily, at a salary of Rs. 400 a month. Cooper accepted the invitation and came to Chennai (Madras). He and his staff opened Presidency School, a preparatory school, in a rented building in Egmore known as Edinburgh Home on 15 October 1840. Cooper remained in the preparatory school for only a few months. Soon after Eyre Burton Powells arrival and before the opening of the high school department in April 1841, he returned to Kolkata (Calcutta). The preparatory School was shifted to Pophams Broadway in 1841.
