First first Pradhosham(13th Lunar day) was believed to be held here, where Lakshmi, Kamadhenu cow and so on.. came out from Ocean.. With respect to the context that once gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuras) were churning the milky ocean hoping to extract Amirtham (Divine Nectar)

SRI KURUNGALEESHWARAR TEMPLE is a Tiruppugazh sthalam - sung by Saint Arunagirinathar in praise of Lord Murugan. This temple is situated on the banks of river Cooum at Koyambedu. The presiding deity is called as Kurungaleeswarar / Kuchalavapureeswarar and Mother is called as Dharmasamvardhini / Aram Valartha Nayagi. It is also said that the name of this place in ancient days was Kosai Nagar, King Kulothunga Chozha is said to have ruled in the 12th Century and hence it is said that the temple was constructed during his period. As per the Legend, When Sri Rama sent the Aswamedha horse around the country, Lava and Kusa brought the horse to their custody. Without knowing that it was His sons who captured the horse, Sri Rama sent Lakshmana who fought a battle with them. As Lava and Kusa fought against their own uncle, they acquired a Dhosham called Gothra Dhosham. To be relieved of it, it is said that, they installed and worshipped Lord Shiva in this place. Must have darshan.

A dream which was becoming true ...a beautiful experience which one can have by visiting this ancient temple which is 1000s of years old..Situated in the heart of the today developed Chennai city ....Koyambedu ,Poonthamalli high road near Koyambedu bus terminus..The temple is enchanting and near the entrance is a 16 pillared mandapam which also encloses Sarabeshvarar along with Lord Narasimhar in one of its pillars. People throng to worship on rahukalam on sundays which is very famous here..On entering the temple through its seven storeyed entrance we have the jwajasthambam or kodimaram..near by is Nandhi bagawan who is special here as he is found with his mookanangayaru and his sitting position..we have thani sannidhi for Adhigara Nandhi which is also rare..also sannidhis for Kala Bhairavar, VeeraBhadrar. An other 16 pillared mandapam which encloses sannidhis of Vinayagar, Kurungaleeswarar or Kusalavapureeswarar...his consort Devi Dharmasamvardhini or AramvalarthaNayagi...behind Lord Shivas sannidhi we can see Lord Dhakshinamoorthy which is rare..63 nayanmayars,Lord Sooriyan are here in koshtam..as we go around thani sannidhis for Vinayagar, Murugar, Navagraham are found..We have palamaram( jack fruit tree) here as sthalavriksham and a Goshala for maintaining cows..a few flowering plants and other trees are maintained. According to the mythology Sage Valmiki is said to have given shelter to Mother Sita Devi when Lord Rama sent her to forest when she was expecting...She gave birth to Lava and Kusha who grew up in this place...when Ramas Ashmedha horse entered this area they abducted it and fought with Lakshmana , Hanuman and finally with Rama without knowing it was their father..when they knew it they repended because they were captured by Pithru dosham ..to overcome their dosham according to their guru Vamiki they established a lingam to worship to relieve of their dosha...but found the lingam to be very big to do pooja...Lord Shiva to the amusement of the kids became small in size meaning Kurungaleeswarar and relieved them of the dosham...Pradosha poojai is very famous here.. Theertham KusaLava theertham...Temple timings are 5.30am to 12noon..4.30pm to 8.30pm.

Koyambedu in Chennai derives its name from, KO = Horse, Ambu = Arrow, Pedu = Fence( Veli in Tamil). The place is where the Ashram of Rishi Valmiki was located. The twins Lava and Kusha were born here & they arrested the horse of Shri Rama by building a fence of arrows around it.In this place is the Temple of Kurungaleeswarar, which is around 1500 years old and was built by the Medieval Cholas. A Chola king had driven his chariot over the lingam and a portion of the avudayar sank into the mud. As blood started flowing from the lingam, the King, Built the Temple to propitiate to the Lord and seek forgivance.Shri Rama was holding an Aswamedha sacrifice, and the horse of Shri Rama was tied by Lava and Kusha to a fence in the ashram. The prince Lava and Kusha fought against their father. It is only after the intervention of Valmiki and introducing the twins to their father that, the horse was returned back to Shri Ram. In order to relieve themselves of the Pitru Dosha for opposing their father, they prayed to Lord Shiva here in the form of a Lingam. The word kurungal means Small or Shrunk, Eshwarar means Lord. The Lord shrunk himself to the size of the young Kids to pray. Hence the Lord is also known as Kushalavapureeshwarar. The Shiva worshipped by the children Kusha & Lava is small in size. The inner pillared hall has a big figure of Lord Vigneshwara in between the Swamy and Ambal Sannidhi. Crossing this you come into the, Ardhamandapam and Garbhagriham. There is a circumbulation path in the Ardhamandapam.Coming out of the Mukhamandapam adjascent to it is the Mandapam where you have the Sannidhi of the Goddess. The goddess has her left foot forward signifying her presence to help devotees. On the front right side of the Sannidhi is the Navagraha idols on a round lotus(Padma) Pedestal ( unique). The Sun god is on a raised level with his consorts Usha & Chaya in a chariot pulled by 7 horses and the charioteer Aruna. The other Navagraha’s surrounding in a lower level in a round fashion. The unique feature of this temple is the lord faces North, rarely do you find temples were lord Shiva faces North. Further the Ambal Dharmasamvardhini or Aram Valartha Nayagi.Aram (Good deeds) Valartha (Enhancing) Nayagi.(Queen or Goddess) is on the right hand side of the Lord facing North. Generally in all temples the Swamy faces east and the Ambal faces South. This feature of the goddess on the right hand side is also found in the Madurai Meenakshi Temple.Things to Know or See :1.This temple is known as Adipradoshapuri, as the first ever Pradosha puja seems to have been performed here.2. The pillar in which Lava & Kusha tied the horse of Shri Rama.3.The left leg of the goddess is put forward to do good deeds for the devotees.4. The round ( Padma) Navagraha Pedestal.5.Nandi with a rope from its nostril and raised leg.6. Paintings and frescos in each shrine.
