We went for a coffee breakz after the lockdown was lifted and what a pleasant surprise! To enter. We were asked for our names, phone numbers, temperature checked , sanitizers provided etc.The taste and ambiance hasnt changed in the years and more importantly the service and hygiene. Waiters and entire staff were wearing hair nets, face shields and mask and it was very reassuring to sit for an hour and eat in peace. They fully sterilize their plates, spoons and utensils. Parking is plenty as its part of the campus of Hotel Ashoka, an icon in Chennai.
They have lost their taste and service
The pure veg place is surely one of the legendary places for trying out veggie delights of South India. The place looks the same for the last 2 decades or me be more. The South Indian Coffee is amazing. The Idlies, Vadaas, Dosais, the Pongals stand apart but the importance this place had may be 20 years back is fading. If Ashoka and its restaurant really wants to be part of the rat race then they truly have to something in terms of a newly designed resturant to stay afloat as there are so many good restaurants popping up in Chennai every 2nd week. So watch out Abhinandan to stay relevant and take your rightfull place in the pantheon of Chennais greatest restaurants.
Dont miss out their meals, lunch and dinner. Paruppu podi and Gongura are terrific. Would love to have avakkai without garlic.
Went there for dinner, just for their delicious Dosa and Poori. Both were amazing and they have maintained the taste for several decades now.The manager asked us to try a Musk Melon ice cream and this came out to be a super surprise. The ice cream was, mixed with a bunch of nuts along with the fruit itself scrapped inside and mixed together as a liquid. Costed 189 but definitely worth it.Do try out their special lunch when you visit them..
Went there craving the mysore masala dosa. Turned out to be a regular masala dosa with the red chutney smeared. Taste good though. The curd vada was awesome. Will visit again. Ambience good. Clean and retro.
Not operating with AC during covid unlock phase, was a difficult to handle temperature
This is definitely one of the most happening restaurants in Egmore. The way they handle the crowd is just amazing . Eventhough its crowded the staff always manage to find you a seat and food arrives in around 10-15 minutes .if youre looking for a good satisfying lunch meals this is definitely the place to visit.!
This restaurant is with Hotel Ashoka in Egmore. Its an old place, full of charm and oodles of good food. N when I say Old place, its not one of those new places what has been given the old place look... This is Old... N have been maintained that way... N one can c the Pride of keeping it that way everywhere. There is enough parking space for any number of vehicles. The food is good, eve though we jus went in for a day time snack. The hospitality extended was good, the staff was courteous
Great taste, Ample car parking space! A place you can undoubtedly visit without worrying about car parking.
Superb food no complaints. The only suggestion I can give is they can change their interior it is very dull but I will not say it is worst ambience its my personal suggestion anyway good food 👌.
Famoulsy knows as Hotel Ashoka-Egmore is One of the finest and oldest veg restaurants in Chennai. Awesome taste ,multicuisine options, friendly staff, ample parking , clean ,hygienic and spacious area. You have lodging & banquet halls in the same property.Dont miss to order Andra meals during your visit where u need to mix the dhall powder , ghee and Gongara chutney on hot served white rice to get a vera level taste..
Excellent food great ambience nice service but prices like a 3 star hotel
Ideal place for South Indian food...in the heart of city...with ample car parking
One of the oldest hotels in chennai. They provide only Veg food here and food is of excellent qualityService is not fast here so expect delays
It would be be better if Food is hot & little more quick service.....
Excellent Place to have Veg Meals. Spacious & Courteous service
Awesome place ! Always try their idly, vada and sambar and podi Idly ! Very hygienic ! Good staffs ,nice parking ! Have been going here for 10 years plus !!! ....
Had to wait 15-20 mins for placing order. Not managed well. Losing the old charm and taste.
Food was good... but for meals 200rs per meals is not value for money... For this hotel maris lunch is worth the money..
Its a traditional South Indian restaurant located in Chennai. I enjoyed idli sambar with tomotobath
Special meals is wow.. Tea & Coffee is not good. Decent and oldest restaurant of the town
Real traditional udupi taste . Enjoyable
Not worth the money you gonna pay. Ultra old place with ultra high price. Even before I leave a tip. The waiter took his own tip and left me the balance. One dosa, one pongal, one vada and one coffee costed me around 300.Really not worth it.
Great restaurant, nice variety, wonderful food, reasonable prices and good ambience
Spacious, car parking, ideal for South Indian dishes
Best vegitarian hotel in the city and the Paruppu powder which they are giving all ng with Andhra meals is yummy a must try dish
South Indian meals and other good food
Same taste as 40 years back
Nostalgic.. The hotel still maintains the old ambience with the entire setup like furniture, interiors, cutlery and even the waiting and cleaning staff. Taste and portion are decent. Little Pricey. The service is also a little laidback like old times. A must visit for people like to relive their memories.
This place has lost it and not like the way it was...Poor quality and sad service...
Went there for breakfast after a longtime. The food tasted superb like the good old days. Glad to see it crowded with lots of old timers and youngsters. Wish they could refurbish the place though.
South Indian food is great here, more parking
The food is good and tasty. Ambience is good. Its a old traditional south indian hotel. 3 decades back all top people used to host dinner | marriage reception here. I felt the food rate is little high. Otherwise very nice south indian hotel.
Taste has gone down due to oldest restaurant still people comes here
Best veg restaurent 👍
The place serves good vegetarian South Indian food and some North Indian dishes too. The food and the portions served are good but the service is very poor. The waiters are rude and I’ve seen waiters abuse customers if they don’t tip them. With the cuisine being aligned to North Indian dishes, neither the South Indian nor the North Indian dishes are good enough. The prices are not cheap by any means but the place has got ample parking space.
Good food and beverage. Clean and well maintained. Ample parking space. Good service.
Ambience, service and quality that makes dining a unique experience. Well worth the experience.
An old restaurant part of an even older landmark - asoka hotel in Egmore. It is a very spacious place serving pure veg fare which is tasty, good quality and reasonably priced. Service is efficient.
Good place to dine In
Nice food with relaxtion atmosphere
Nice place for a quick bite. Can accomodate bigger groups of people as there is huge seating facility. A bit expensive, two cups of coffee for 95, but then some facilities and quality with local speciality come at a cost. Ample parking space available as well.
Good place for quality vegetarian food. Morning breakfast buffet has an excellent spread.Good service
Very authentic pure veg lunch/ meals :.. if your around egmore definitely try this restaurant at Ashoka hotels
South Indian meals very bad taste
Good South Indian food
Food quality is bad any more
The same old fashioned Restaurant inside Ashoka hotel. Good food and ample parking space, little expensive.
The restaurant is situated Inside Hotel Ashoka Egmore, on the corner of Pantheon Road and opposite to Women’s Hospital. Restaurant is open between 7 am to 11 pm and the last orders are accepted at 10.45 pm. It’s a fine dining restaurant and part of the very famous Ballal Group. They have branches in Bangalore, Chennai and Moodbidri. Ample parking space available and the restaurant has about 120 to 200 seating capacity approximately. This place is one of my favourite place and I have been coming to this place since 1990 and I never get bored of this place. Even to today the standards are maintained and kudos to the management. Introduced this place to my nephews on our recent visit to Chennai. Every item we ordered was awesome. My favourite is madras meals and in that the Vatha Kulambu with ghee and rice is nirvana. Even when I am writing this review my mouth is watering. My nephews ordered Masala Dosa, Rava Dosa, Mini Idly with Ghee & the newly introduced item Fruit Shake served in Musk Melon (Referee image posted) they just freaked out, enjoyed every item ordered. One thing I would like to mentioned here is, when people want order just simple rice sambar or rice rasam its not available on the menu, like the way we order in any of the restaurants in Bangalore. Also, don’t miss the traditional filter coffee, I strongly recommend for the filter coffee lovers. Otherwise it is fantastic, overall awesome experience and strongly recommend this place for the awesome food.
Very good food. Great taste
Good food, age old traditional Ashoka hotel, parking, nice atmosphere
Yummy food n special grape juice is really good over here..
The classic South Indian restaurant. A historical feeding spot that retains its charm.
Vegetarian restaurant in Egmore with ample car parking dining with family members and friends is ideal.
It is a pure Vegetarian restaurant, a Great Landmark to the City. Had a Wonderful reputation for the food and service, now slightly going downhill in respect of the quality of food.
Same great taste and service
Good classic and nostalgic restaurant catering to South and North Indian food. South Indian food especially idlys and Dosas are classic here. And it has a super car parking facility. Love this place
Nice place and great south indian food.
Had Madras meals. Good taste.
It is a very old place but the quality of food is still the same.

Tasty food, little heavy on the money but worth it. Friendly staff.
Do try the elneer pudding its just out of this world!!
Traditional, even old-fashioned, simple no-frills, but amazingly tasty food. Speciality is Udupi style food.A must visit for all
Food is good but service has gone down over the years
Good Ambience... Good Veg Food....Plenty Of Car Parking Space....
Tasty food u will get all Karnataka type food
Naam bada dharshan chota, very high priced food, absolute tasteless, even the sambar is pathetic, hotel Rajbhavan, is much better.
I just love their food 😍
The meals was delicious
Visiting this place for ages, love its saappad😋😋😋
Traditional service Nice Place Tasty food
Inside Hotel Ashoka. Near Egmore station. Veg restaurant, reasonable price. Try Gongura in lunch. North Indian thaali, South Indian and Special Thaali available for lunch. Ample car park. Good service.
Slow service. Sambhar is sweet, Karnataka style. The pongal is ok ok. An organisation that is living on past greatness.
Poor service but food is tasty
Typical South Indian Restaurant with North Indian Flavour..
Ashoka has been our favorite place for years, their snack items are well prepared, I did find the puris disappointing. Meals are good, they can include better vegetables, idlis are the best, also dosai
Good south Indian food that too yummy meals served in classic bowls
Great place for having podi rice!!! Loved it!
