Istanbul Modern in its temporary place is still as good as before. “ This place we call world” exhibition showcases Selma Gurbuz’s colourful world ranging from paintings , installations, sculptures and videos. Unfortunately, the artist passed away recently and she left us alone in this place we call world :(
Small modern art gallery in the super trendy Galata area. I spent under two hours here soaking up some great Turkish art from the past 70 years or so. It was nicely curated, accessible to wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility. There are excellent descriptions in English and Turkish and there is also an audioguide available. My only criticism is that there was a video installation with flashing lights which couldnt be avoided by an epileptic visitor because there was no epilepsy warning sign that I could find.
The collection is very little and poor. I have many expectations, but its good for people who have never visited any museums like Louvre or Hermitage. There are many things for making better, but the collection is on the first place.
Well organized, written narratives in Turkish/English, strict covid protocols that are enforced. Definitely worth a visit. Closed Mondays busiest on Thursday when locals enter for free.
Only 4 floors available without cinema and 4th floor… not much of sculptures just some photos, paintings and videos. Very interesting tho
Perched on the Golden Horn, this is the most upbeat and thoroughly European museum in Turkey. It houses both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, providing a showcase for many of the eccentric and talented personalities who have shaped modern art in Turkey, and reflecting the main trends and themes of Turkish art from the early 20th century to the present day. Many of the paintings and drawings are from the private collection of the Ecacıbaşı family, who founded the museum. The collection includes abstract art, landscapes, watercolours and the plastic arts as well as a sculpture garden and a stunning exhibition of black-and-white photography. Exhibitions by contemporary artists from abroad are held regularly, as the museum embraces “Modern Experiences”.
Conveniently located from the Sishane metro station and midst of tourist hub. Only floor 2 and 3 exhibits were open for visitors. On Thursdays the Turkish residents are exempt from entry fee. There is a museum shop on ground floor. The exhibits on floor 3 are mostly paintings by Turkish artists. Floor 2 has exhibits mix of photography, video projection, movies and paintings. Kids aged 5 and 11 with us got bored.
A good museum worth visiting, even though the price is average. Definitely worth the money if you’re into art :)
Two floors were out of bounds, different prices for foreigners and Turkish citizens. It feels empty. The video section was loud and quiet at the same time, sounds overlapped each other. The gift shop was too expensive to buy anything from and I would have appreciated mini copies of the paintings to buy but there were none.Of course it was clean security everywhere. Overall it feels “stuffy” and could use some “fresh air.”
Never have I come across such a powerful display of art. I am no artist, but the descriptions provided such depth to the work that it is unmatched by many art exhibits around the world. The best part about it is that its only 3 floors and is easily covered in 45 minutes.
It was lovely to explore modern art of Turkey. They had a great collection from local artist. The museum itself was small but well organized. The staff were helpful and friendly.
Wannabe contemporary art museum with bloated ego. In fact it is filled with meaningless artworks, accompanied by vague descriptions. The least exciting arts gallery Ive visited
Very small. And the security guards are staring at you making sure your mask is completely covering your face!
Ive always seen pictures and videos from the istanbul meseum but never visitied. recently i did and im very happy i did. its very good
A very small museum with a completely unpretentious collection. In 2016, in the Beyoglu district, there was a beautiful Modern Istanbul Museum with excellent expositions, but it closed. A small part of the paintings and sculptures migrated to this building. I do not recommend wasting time on it. Entrance for tourists is 68 liras. 4 small floors which are difficult to spend more than 20 minutes on. Better pay attention, albeit not to a museum of modern art, but to a museum with a capital M - Rahmi M. Koç Museum. Also notice the old brewery - converted into free modern art galleries and craft beer bars - Yapı Kredi bomontiada in Sisli district.
Definitely worth visiting on a trip to istanbul if you appreciate modern art. Some beautiful pieces.
Extremely rude staff. Especially the old blonde lady at the reception. Theres a way to treat customers and they have no idea how to do so.We paid to get in we didnt come for free.First and last time ever
Better to wait till it is back on its old place near water. The new building is much smaller and the exhibition is less interesting.
Its nice to see the art from up close but it was a really short tour (40min max)
This is museum of modern and contemporary art. In general, the museum is very small: 5 small floors, including the basement. Two floors are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, the rest to permanent exhibitions. There are about 15 paintings on each floor. There are 3-4 pieces of interesting work for the entire museum. The museum is unreasonably expensive: a ticket costs 68 Turkish Liras. But, again, the exhibit is very small and the absolute majority of works are paintings. The tour will take about 40 minutes. Downstairs is a store with exorbitant prices. The place is not recommended for a visit.
Nice little museum with local artists, tbh expected more from a world capital but worth a visit.
Interresting. Both modern art and photographies. Can be done in 45 minutes...
The front desk people were super nice with a good English for foreign visitors, the museum is 4 floos, they recommended theat i go the 4th and go down floor after floor, the museum collection was amazing, but it was small it didnt take more than half an hour, but it was great experience, the only bad thing was the security they werent friendly at all, and that made me super uncomfortable, and i know its understandable because theyre taking care of a national treasure, but it was over the top,Anyway the museum was interesting and i loved itSmall advice : before you go ask if there is an exhibition, it will make the visit much fun.
Very interesting exhibits in photography, mixed media, sculpture and painting. Great introduction to the uniquely vibrant and bold turkish modern art.
The gallery including african vibes was awesome! must-see in istanbul!
Personally I am not that impressed with the continuous exhibition of the museumHowever they do have amazing special exhibitions at times. So my recommendation is to check out what these are, if it’s something you want to see, it’s well worth the quite steep entry fee.
I liked the exhibition, but the museum is too small.
3rd floor Realy good exb. other ok. about 65 tlr for person ://
Amazing museum with different floors of exhibitions, always something new to see!
Here you will not find any ancient artifacts, just modern art. So, its great place to visit if you are open minded person and ready to see something new or even strange. Also there are a free library, book and gift stores, small cafeteria
The collection is small for the ticket. Pretty surreal environment, especially at the permanent collection floors. I dont reccomend a visit here
Very interesting exhibitions, especially i was impressed of Ara Gülens photo exhibition with showing of his photos on screens. But one floor of the museum was closed. Good moment: any picture or instalation has explanation of maining or idea - it helps a lot to understand modern art 🧐🤓
Gallery of texture. Fabric. Historical pictures of turkey and forms. But some picture on google wasnt there
The museum is quite small, and the collection is very specific. Delicious coffee on the ground floor and free toilet available even without a ticket. But a ticket of 60 til, for such a collection and modest simplicity it is too much.
Stunning idea and place. Very interesting visit
If you want to see real Modern Art you have to go to this place. Perfect atmosphere and collection. it also has a very nice view and very nice cafe.
People please stop give this place 4-5 stars rating. This museum is cheating. Entrance ticket costs 9 euro. Nothing worth to see inside . Anyone of local historical museum would be better. Theres no point to visit it.
Great place. Temporary exhibitions are held in the bottom and it is free for Turkish citizens on Thursday.
Temporary but valuable and adorable. Looking forward to seeing this museum in new quarters as they say in 2021. 5 stars!Thursdays are free admission.
Overrated and overpriced. Not much to see just a few paintings, barely any installations.
Not worth visiting. u will see nothing there
Safe to visit even during Covid times
Loved the collection and architecture. And when you get to the top floor, there’s a lovely roof terrace to hang out and re-energize💪🏼
Good array of contemporary art. Really interesting work #contemporaryart #turkishcontemporary
Had an amazing time with my sweetheart at the museum, great paintings, sculptures.. go there I’m sure you will love it as much as I did
Very cool and hipster place to be. Lots of amazing arts displayed.Great cafe oversee the river. Must go for art fans
Reasonably priced but not a lot to see
A bit small and quite expensive (60 tl on May 19). The exhibitions were interesting and gave a very nice insight about Turkish artists
It’s too small or not well thought out for this kind of museum. It’s very clean and the staff very organised.
Wonderful modern paintings and sculptures. The view over the Marmaray see and Haya Sophia and Topkapı Palace is outstanding.
Cant rate the art of course, but they take good care of the place its clean, neat and has enough lighting to see the pieces, and they only let in 12 people at a time in each floor.
Perfect for a couple of hours, nice museum on the inside, the art featured was also enjoyable to look at and read about. Theres also a nice restaurant with an outdoor terrace overlooking the water.
Nice modern museum. Restaurant inside is a bit ove priced but overall nice place.
I love the art inside the place and I reccomend to visit it to enjoy
It is worth a visit but this museum displays too many second rate pieces which lower the overall quality.Nice staff. The entrance fee is 40TL (6€).Photography is allowed.
Beautiful modern art museum. You can take a tour in less than 2 hours. Currently there is an amazing exhibit of Canan Tolon until february 2020.
Very disappointed. Not worth going here. And high entrance fee 72 TL
Great museum, enjoyed the display, the building and the art work. Warmly recommend
Very disappointing collection. The museum is very small and spans across 5 floors (one of them is the entrance lobby). There is only one small hall in each floor, featuring pretty much the same array of artwork by 3 or 4 artists. So not only that the collection is small, it feels like it repeats itself. The entry fee (72 TL) is somewhat outrageous for what you get.
Permanent collection is so so. Temporary exhibits were more interesting to me.
The original location has sadly closed. The museum has moved to a swing space in Beyoglu until their new Renzo Piano building is ready. This was the first private art museum dedicated to modern art in Istanbul, and the permanent collection is wonderful. Can’t wait to see what they do with the new spaces.
The exhibit on Canan Tolon blew me away.
Interesting artist, but the watchdogs are on your back each segonde 😂😂😂
The collection isn’t too big, but quite interesting. #letsguide
It is a rare space for creativity in Istanbul. There is some incredible artwork and well curated exhibitions
Nice small modern art museum with cinema. I thought the ticket price was a bit over considering the size of the museum.
Although am not an artist myself so my opinion doesnt matter much, still enjoyed it.
Great museum, except surrounding construction makes it difficult to access currently. Lovely Bosphorus view in its Cafe/restaurant.
My favorite museum in Istanbul. Every Thursday, Istanbul Modern offers free admission to residents of Turkey.
İstanbul Museum of Modern Art is currently at its temporary location Pera. It will move to its new building at Salıpazarı hopefully in 2020. The must exhibition to see right now is about the works of Turkish photographer Ara Güler. These are black and white film prints of old İstanbul around 1950s and 60s.
Good experience. Small exhibition in the heart of Istanbul. Good contrast to historical sights.
Really worth going to. Great local artist in a good location
Part wise outstanding art.
Amazing contemporary art museum.
