The tourist center is open all days of the week. It’s just closed on certain public holidays. If you go on a weekday you can go inside the buildings. On weekends you can only view from outside. We went for the 10am tour on a Sunday. We were the only people on the tour! The building exteriors were renovated recently. The water was drained from the high court building.. they said for renovations... if you love architecture and want to do a weekend trip up to Chandigarh it’s worth it. Don’t come to Chandigarh just to see these buildings if your coming internationally. Too much hassle.

Capitol complex is one of the best places to see in Chandigarh. Not only the complex but the whold area near about is eye pleasing. Capitol complex isbone of the 17 sites of the Architectural work of Le Corbusier inscribed on the world heritage list of UNESCO. This complex is heavily guarded and security is very tight here. To visit this complex, one needs to go to Tourist center and there you have to register yourself with a valid ID proof. Videography is not allowed here. We can see many historical architectural work in this complex like Secretariat and High court of Punjab and Haryana High, Geometric Hill, Tower of Shadow, Open hand monument.A must go place in Chandigarh.

The tourism guy was strict and had to follow many rules while entering such a heritage place designed by Ar. Charles Correa. One have to go through checking point while entering to the main complex having washroom area attached to the structure.Open hand structure was another element ahead with a message of ready to give and ready to take after independence from britishers rule.Light and shadow structure with a play of fins.Moving ahead one will come to High court with great front area to appreciate the work and wonder the spread of the courts.Roof was elemental and though seemed light weighted made of mass of concrete.Ahead one can see the ASSEMBLY HALL with restrictions of not carrying any media to capture inner pics of assembly. The proportionate work was marvellous with great inner scape and enigmatic atmos inside. It had wider opening at center to get maximum day lightProper ramps made to reach the level difference.Haryana assembly was next to the Assembly Hall with pyramidal opening as rooftop for daylight.

Come and witness the dynamics of the concrete! This architectural piece by Le Corbusier shows you how raw and minimal design idea can create a magnificent impact on your very existence! The landscape has been taken care of, in the form of plantations and an artificial waterbody. The overall experience is that you leave the place in awe of the great architect.

This being a World Heritage Site, I expected a lot from it. But honestly, the trip turns into a disaster after the first half an hour. so coming to the details:there is no place on the internet where you can find elaborate directions on where to go, how to reach. Although the chandigarh tourism website provides for the online pass registration, but it doesnt work. *digital india*. Plus you dont need it. I tried finding the place based on google maps location (there were just no directions around). I asked a policeman on how to and where to go for the complex, he was not only rude, but also completely misguided me.So this is the procedure: you have to go the tourism centre in sector 1 around 15 mins before the starting time along with an ID proof. there will be three batches: at 10, 12 and 3. duration of the tour is around 1.5 hours. When the guided tour started, they took us to the punjab and haryana high court followed by the open hand museum. These two locations were amazing. We were then taken to vidhan sabha and nearby buildings: geometric hills, tower of shadow. The trip starts to go downhill from here. The guide kept telling us all the rati rataai info about them but he floundered whenever a question was asked. there is no properly constructed way from vidhan sabha to its back side. Once we were in Vidhan Sabha, they asked us to deposit our belongings. there are no lockers available inside, and one has to trust them with the personal belongings. However, the architecture inside makes you forget the inconvenience. Also, the worst is yet to come.We were then taken to the secretariat, for a trip to the building roof. I havent seen a more poorly kept monument than this. Chandigarh Administration has completely ruined this treasure. the roof is in shambles. Although you get to see the birds eye view of the area, you also get to see too many paan stains around. Now coming to professionalism of the guide. Many times you will find him gossiping around with people than doing his job. After the visit, it would have been nicer had he announced that the trip has ended. Instead once We were out of the secretariat, he just walked away from the group and vanished. Also a feedback form at the end, would have prevented me from writing this rant online. So my suggestion: skip the secretariat when going for the tour.

We made our reservation with the Visitors Center arriving at our scheduled 10AM finding it closed for Bank Holiday. Determined to self guide our visit, we were confronted/refused by the prevalent Indian Army personnel. We did however receive permission to visit the Open Hand Monument. From here, we walked to the High Court, then up the center esplanade to the Tower of Shadows, Martyrs Memorial, Geometric Hill, Legislative Assembly, and close to the huge 820 long 8 story Secretariat. Unfortunately the complex is showing its age(1951-1956); built in unadorned raw concrete and without landscaped grounds.

Chandigarh is a unique amalgamation of contemporary urban design, new-age architecture, and old-world charm, culture, and charisma. It is a Union Territory governed directly by the Central Government, and yet is the administrative capital of both Punjab and Haryana while not being part of either. This makes its position in the Indian geographical and political context as well as in urban planning, unprecedented.Commissioned post-Independence and designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, Chandigarh is recognized worldwide as an outstanding example in urban design and planning, and architecture. You get to see this first hand when you enter the city. Nowhere is this more richly exhibited than the 100-acre Chandigarh Capitol Complex, a government compound which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It comprises three buildings, three monuments and a lake, including the Palace of Assembly or Legislative Assembly, Secretariat, High Court, Open Hand Monument, Geometric Hill, and Tower of Shadows. On the other end of the complex, a short drive away is the famed Rock Garden put together by the immortal Nek Chand. It is a great lesson in urban conservation and waste management, and an absolute sight to behold. Then there is the man-made reservoir, the Sukhna Lake. The lake is enclosed by a golf course on the south and the famous Rose Garden on its western end. It is home to a number of fishes, and migratory birds like cranes and Siberian ducks. Declared a reserved national wetland by the Government of India, the lake is a regular for joggers and nature lovers from dawn till dusk. The scenic beauty of the lake serves as a true delight for the photographers and artists who love to capture the mesmerizing view. The sectors, the detailed layouts, the architecture, the captivating natural habitat, Chandigarh is a must for any avid traveler anywhere in the country or abroad.
