Bindusagar Lake is located in the right side of the Talabazar road leading from Kedargouri Chowk to Lingaraja Temple, Old Town, Bhubaneswar. This road is also known as Bindusagar Road. It is now under the care and maintenance of Lingaraja Temple Administration. The tank is enclosed within a masonry embankment made of dressed laterite blocks. It is the largest water body of Bhubaneswar. All the rituals of Lord Lingarajaa are closely associated with this lake.According to the local tradition, Shiva and Parvati after their marriage came to Varanasi. But with the passage of time, Varanasi became a populated area. Lord Siva chose Ekamrakshetra for meditation in disguise. This place was having a single huge mango tree surrounded by jungle. Even it was unknown to Parvati. This place is also known as gupta kashi hidden Varanasi. With the reference from lord Bramha, Devi Parvati came to know about this place and came to Ekamra-Kshetra to search her Lord Shiva. Also she noticed that thousands of cows are going under the huge mango tree and automatically milking a place. She understood that her Lord Shiva is there. So she took care of the cows as a milkmaid. (Gopaluni Temple is There inside Lingaraj Temple Complex and this is one out of the Astmurti) The place from which the cows were coming is known as Gosahasreswara or Gosagaresvar. Devi Parvati in the milkmaid get-up was looking too attractive. It was also noticed by the two demons of this locality, known as Kirti and Vasa. They proposed Parvati to marry. But Parvati killed the two demons by pressing them into the ground with her feet. That particular place became famous as Devi Padahara. After killing the demons Parvati became tired and took rest at a place called Bhabani Shankar Temple. Parvati felt very thirsty and to quench her thirst lord Siva struck his trident at this place, out of which a spring came out. The water was then sanctified by the waters of all rivers, streams and ultimately took the shape of a large water body. Which is today known as Bindusagar.

There is another history of Bhuvanesvara. One day Lord Siva was glorifying the beauty and greatness of this place, and Parvati was hearing from him: There is a pond here called Rohini-sarovera, and a person once fell into it and apparently died. The moment he left his body, however, he assumed a four-handed form and Garuda came and took him on his shoulders to the Lords transcendental abode of Vaikuntha. This is the strength and potency of this particular place in Bhuvanesvara. After hearing this glorification, Parvati began roaming here, desiring to see the holy places, and she happened to learn of a very large Siva-linga. We took darsana of that linga, whose name is Lingaraja. Lingaraja is not merely a Siva-linga. He is really a linga of Hari-hara - Lord Visnu and Lord Siva together. We see in Sri Navadvipa-dhama, where they also live together, that the Deity of Hari-hara has three divisions. On one side is Hari, who is black, on the other side is Lord Siva, who is white, and in between there are three cracks representing Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarasvati. In Navadvipa that beautiful place is called Hari-hara-ksetra. Lord Siva and Lord Visnu, Hari are clearly separated by color and slightly by form, but at this place in Bhuvanesvara the Panda has to show which side is Lord Siva and which is Lord Visnu because the entire linga is dark and has a nonspecific shape.Parvati devi found one thousand beautiful white cows, and they began giving milk from their udders onto Lingaraja. Parvati was very satisfied with them because Krsna loves cows, and the cows were doing abhiseka of the linga who is also Visnu. She started herding those cows and became like a cowherd girl. Gradually, she and the cows entered a beautiful garden, which later became known as Ekamrakanana. This is where Siva left his trident and deerskin, and where he didnt know where Parvati was, when he ran away from Sudarsana cakra. Ananta Vasudeva Mandira and other important places were not visible at that time, as they are now. These places were simply in the form of forests, and Parvati was enjoying the beauty of those areas.Meanwhile, two very cruel demons, called Krti and Vas, became attracted to Parvati. They approached her, making propositions. She had been absorbed in the glory of this place, but now remembered her husband, Lord Siva. Lord Siva immediately appeared and asked, What is the problem?Parvati replied, I am fascinated by the beauty of this place, and I dont want to leave. But these two demons are disturbing me. What should I do?Lord Siva said, These demons are very powerful because they have received many benedictions. They cannot be killed so easily, even by me. Yet, their time has come to be killed. Now you must make an arrangement so that they can be killed. Then in the form of that cowherd girl, Parvati told the demons, Ok, Im ready to accept your proposal, but theres a condition. You will have to fight each other, and whoever wins shall have me. He can put me on his shoulders and in this way help me to roam here. Hearing her words, both brothers began fighting each other. She then put her feet on both of their shoulders, increased her weight, and thus became Bhuvanesvari. She is Bhuvanesvari and Lord Siva is Bhuvanesvara (the male master of this place). When she increased her weight the demons were crushed and killed. After this she was tired. She lay down and told Lord Siva, Im thirsty. Can you please arrange some water for me?Siva created a beautiful pond by his trident, but there was no water. He then invited all the personified pilgrimage places to come, and when they came he told them, You should each give one drop of water to this pond. In Hindi, drop is called bindu, and thus this beautiful pond became known as Bindu-sarovara. Lord Siva and Parvati both bathed in that pond, and Parvati gave the benediction that whoever takes bath in it will be able to see Ananta Vasudev and get the mercy of the Lord. From harikatha spoken at this place on October 5, 2001 by Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayan Gosvami Maharaja

Bindusagar is located in the right side of the Talabazar road leading from Kedargouri Chowk to Lingaraja Temple, Old Town, Bhubaneswar. This road is also known as Bindusagar Road. It is now under the care and maintenance of Lingaraja TempleAdministration. The tank is enclosed within a masonry embankment made of dressed laterite blocks. It is the largest water body of Bhubaneswar. All the rituals of Lord Lingarajaa are closely associated with this tank. After years of languishing in neglect, the oldest and largest water body of the Capital, Bindusagar lake, is all set for a revamp. To bring back the lost glory of the historical pond and make it an attractive tourist spot, the Tourism Department has launched a musical fountain project coupled with a multimedia laser show at the lake. This project is inagurated by CM nabeen pattnaik on 20th November 2018.The project has been developed at a cost of rupees eight crores. Premierworld Technology, a private firm, which has developed the project, has also been given the charge of its operation and maintenance for five years.Marketing manager of Premierworld Saroj Kumar Panigrahi said the musical fountain has been programmed with chants of Shiv Panchakshyar and Shiv Tandav with stunning laser images of Om and lord Shiva.Besides, the laser show will also narrate the history of Ekamra Kshetra and Bindusagar, including references to Lord Lingaraj and his major festivals. The total duration of the show would be 25 minutes, he said.Tourism officials said the fountain and laser show would be a unique entertainment experience for the visitors. The new project, meanwhile, has strengthened the hope for rejuvenation of the pond. The lake, which is believed to have been originated in 7th century AD, is used by the devotees and priests for conducting the rituals of lord Lingaraj. Legends have it that the pond was created by Lord Shiva by bringing water from all the holy places to quench the thirst of Goddess Parvati.Ironically, the largest tank located to the north of the Lingaraj Temple and to the east of the Ananta Vasudeva Temple in Ekamra Bhubaneswar (Old town) was also the most neglected spot in the Capital till now.The water body has been polluted due to religious activities and dumping of trash. The holy water tank is also filled with weeds and algae. Though `20 crores were spent in one and a half decade for its restoration, the lake didnt see any improvement due to poor maintenance. However, both State Tourism Department and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) have pulled their socks up for its cleaning and beautification. The State Tourism Department had sanctioned `7 crores in July for its upliftment. It had asked the civic body to restore the pond on priority basis ahead of Bhubaneswar Art Trail (BAT) 2018 and World Cup Hockey.Accordingly, the BMC started cleaning Bindusagar lake from the third week of October. Engineering section of BMC has taken up the cleaning work of the historic lake, spread across 21.9 acres.According to Executive Engineer, BMC Division II, Asim Mishra cleaning of the lake is covering 450 metres length and 320 metre width of the lake. Around 50 workers had bbeen engaged to remove the weeds from the lake, BMC officials said. The civic authories have also asked a private agency to lift ritual offerings from the lake during Mahalaya. The agency will also remove the miniature boats, which will be sailed as part of a ritual during Kartik Purnima.
