Visited here in September, 2014.The Moscow university isnt just a simple and common university. This magnificent cathedral-like university features its intimidating and overwhelming architectural design, making itself the attractive icon in this region. The unique design perhaps reflects local architecture style relating to Russian history as well as its way of building up culture.Unfortunately I dont have a deep understanding in this filed, but I can definitely say I love this nice design. When I visited here, somehow didnt try entering. So I have no ideas on what it is like inside, and how students here spend their time. Hope someone else reports them in detail here!!
This is a must see from the outside. Visitors arent allowed inside the campus. Outstanding structure, so detailed. Ive not seen such University building like this one. Tourist comes in busses to see this University from all over the world. Many tours include this campus under places to see in Moscow. Theres also a very beautiful park outside the University which is a must see especially during fall. The park is covered with dense Maple trees so during fall the Maple leaves cover the entire walkway and grass in the park. We took off our shoes and walked around the park stepping on the soft maple leaves. Everyone at the park was walking like that because the leaves are so soft. Entire area smells like maple syrup. Completely beautiful just like in movies. Im attaching pictures of the University and park.
Lomonosov Moscow State University is the leading Russian research and educational centre and the oldest Russian university founded by Empress Elisabeth I of the House of Romanov in 1755 at the proposal of the members of the Imperial Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts, Mikhail V. Lomonosov, and Ivan I. Shuvalov, the first Russian Minister of Education. More than 60 Russian institutions of higher education trace their history back to Lomonosov MSU. The majority of all 26 internationally renowned Russian scientific societies and 9 associations were founded on the basis of Lomonosov MSU. In 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the Federal Law On Lomonosov Moscow State University. The law enables Lomonosov MSU to establish its own education standards and requirements, hold extra admission examinations, and issue its own diplomas equal in status to the government standard documents. In 2010, Lomonosov MSU, under the auspices of the Government of the Russian Federation, adopted a development programme for the period 2010 through 2020. The programme encompasses a wide range of scientific research, viz. space exploration and space technologies, biotechnologies, nanotechnologies and bionanosystems, research into advanced materials, energy efficiency and alternative energy sources, geophysics, strategic IT, cognitive science and research into humanitarian bases for national and global processes.
Michail Vasilijevic Lomonosov did studies in Marburg from 1736 to 1739. It is nearby my hometown: Darmstadt, Deutschland

Ivan Shuvalov and Mikhail Lomonosov promoted the idea of a university in Moscow, and Russian Empress Elizabeth decreed its establishment on 23 January [O.S. 12 January] 1755. The first lectures were given on 7 May [O.S. 26 April]. Russians still celebrate 25 January as Students Day. (Foundation of the University is traditionally associated with the feast of Saint Tatiana, celebrated by the Russian Orthodox Church on 12 January Julian, which corresponds to 25 January Gregorian in the 20th–21st centuries.)Saint Petersburg State University and Moscow State University engage in friendly rivalry over the title of Russias oldest university. Though Moscow State University was founded in 1755, its competitor in St. Petersburg has had a continuous existence as a university since 1819 and sees itself as the successor of an academy established on 24 January 1724, by a decree of Peter the Great. The present Moscow State University originally occupied the Principal Medicine Store on Red Square from 1755 to 1787. Catherine the Great transferred the University to a Neoclassical building on the other side of Mokhovaya Street; that main building was constructed between 1782 and 1793 in the Neo-Palladian style, to a design by Matvei Kazakov, and rebuilt by Domenico Giliardi after the fire consumed much of Moscow in 1812.In the 18th century, the University had three departments: philosophy, medicine, and law. A preparatory college was affiliated with the University until its abolition in 1812. In 1779, Mikhail Kheraskov founded a boarding school for noblemen (Благородный пансион) which in 1830 became a gymnasium for the Russian nobility. The university press, run by Nikolay Novikov in the 1780s, published the most popular newspaper in Imperial Russia: Moskovskie Vedomosti. As of 2015, the Old Building housed the Department of Oriental studiesIn 1804, medical education split into clinical (therapy), surgical, and obstetrics faculties. During 1884–1897, the Department of Medicine—supported by private donations, and the municipal and imperial governments—built an extensive, 1.6-kilometer-long, state-of-the-art medical campus in Devichye Pole, between the Garden Ring and Novodevichy Convent; this had been designed by Konstantin Bykovsky, with university doctors like Nikolay Sklifosovskiy and Fyodor Erismann acting as consultants. The campus, and medical education in general, were separated from the Moscow University in 1930. Devichye Pole was operated by the independent I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University and by various other state and private institutions. The roots of student unrest in the University reach deep into the nineteenth century. In 1905, a social-democratic organization emerged at the University and called for the overthrow of the Czarist government and the establishment of a republic in Russia. The imperial government repeatedly threatened to close the University. In 1911, in a protest over the introduction of troops onto the campus and mistreatment of certain professors, 130 scientists and professors resigned en masse, including such prominent men as Nikolay Dimitrievich Zelinskiy, Pyotr Nikolaevich Lebedev, and Sergei Alekseevich Chaplygin; thousands of students were expelled.
The main building of Moscow state university in Moscow, Russia is the tallest educational facility in the world. Main building has been the headquarters of Lomonosov Moscow state university since its inauguration. The main building is 787 feet tall skyscraper, as 36 floors and a spire on atop the floors waiting 12 tonnes. The complex consists of 30 major and 20 auxiliary buildings, an observatory, a botanical garden, a park and a sports area. Its total surface area is about 167 hectares. In the central part of the main body there are two faculties, an assembly hall accommodating 1300 people, a scientific library and museum. the building is equipped with highest speed elevators, each carrying upto 20 people. the main tower, which consumed over 40 thousand tonnes of steel for its framework and 130000 cubic metres of concrete, was inaugurated on September 1, 1953.
Massive building that is simply overwhelming. Is this the biggest university by size of building in the world? It is not often that you see a university with the highest point at 233 meters above the ground.Very good place to take a walk and admire good views of the city of Moscow. The place is usually bustling with people and I felt very safe walking in this place.I hope that the quality of education is as awesome as the size of this place.
It presently has more than 350 laboratories, a number of research institutes, several observatories, and also several affiliated museums.Moscow State has educated many notable alumni including leaders of the Soviet Union and other governments as well as a Patriarch of Russian Orthodoxy.Facilities available inside the building include a concert hall, a theater, a museum, administrative services, a library, a swimming pool, a police station, a post office, a laundry, a hairdressers salon, several canteens, bank offices and ATMs, shops, cafeterias, a bomb shelter, etc. Along with the university administration, the Museum of Earth Sciences and four of the main faculties – Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Geology, the Faculty of Geography, and the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts – now reside in the Main building.
Nice architecture of the building. Tallest in the city. That inspired anyone to go inside. I love the building
One of the greatest in in Moscow for sure. Russia’s largest and one of its oldest institutions of higher education. The whole building is really massive. There are a lot of parks nearby. Its a must see - especially in the early summer morning when there are no tourists.
Great university, very good memories.
Free Crimea, free Ukraine.
The best for bike riding and walking. Green and peaceful.
One of the most magnificent buildings Ive seen. If you like architecture make sure you see this. If not, go anyway.
Moscow State University (MSU; Russian: Московский государственный университет имени М. В. Ломоносова Moskovskiy gosudarstvenny universitet imeni M. V. Lomonosova, often abbreviated МГУ, MGU) is a coeducational and public research university located in Moscow, Russia. It was founded on 23 January [O.S. 12 January] 1755 by Mikhail Lomonosov. During the Soviet period, MSU was renamed after Lomonosov in 1940 and was then known as Lomonosov University. Its current rector is Viktor Sadovnichiy.
Studying in this university feels absolutely surreal! It’s like I’m in Hogwarts and going for Potions class. Not to mention the extremely overwhelming fireworks and light shows too!
Great campus
Worth visiting...Moscow State University was established in 1755. More than 40,000 students (graduate and postgraduate) and about 7,000 undergraduates study at the university, and over 5,000 specialists do the refresher course here. More than 6,000 professors and lecturers, and about 5,000 researchers work for the faculties and research institutes.Every year Moscow University enrolls about 4,000 international students and postgraduates from all over the world.
The best University in Universe. Actually.
This place is best. I have just came from there after being there for a long time. This place looks gorgoeus both at day and night but at night this place looks like heaven.Very good for studies. All the profesors are kind and smart. Best university in Russia. Just awesome.
My teacher Yuri was a very good teacher and interesting. Also the school was in an excellent location.
The best university ever! 🧡🧡🧡
Amazing building of Stalin time. Do suggest to take a walk from Universitet metro station to the main building of the Moscow State University and later visit the panoramic view point and continue walking down through Vorobievy Gory park. Nice couple hours walk. (Unfortunately you cant enter the building without an invitation from someone who works or study there)
I have only seen it from outside, but at night the view is unbelievable! Especially that reflection in the pool! Its lit up only till midnight. Be careful, during the world cup, the whole area around it is open only for fans with fan ID. The nearest metro to this building is Vorobyovy gory, but still its about 30 meters walk from there.
Amazing architecture building, tallest in Moscow, founded in 1755 with 1000 building in campus.
Wonderful
The first time I saw its silhouette. it was in my 79 russian language school book. What i lived in the neighborhood i could ever realize. for sure. A place to visit once in a lifetime.
Russia a beautiful country of beautiful people
From the architecture perspective, amazing, huge complex. Too bad that they dont any more have visits to see the inside or up in the tower. Some private tour companies offer a visit for 200+ USD, not worth that much.
Looking very amazing. Beautiful building with awesome architecture
Beautiful grounds and imposing campus. A must see!
Greatefully
Absolute disgrace! If this is the countrys top law school, I dont know what kind of places are worse.I came from London and decided to visit a lecture. Went all the way down to this place, registered beforehand as a visitor via their web page. The security would not see my name on the list and let me in. The person in the office next door (who was supposed to provide me with a pass) said she could not care less about my web login, said she never gets any registers except through the chancery and that I should call whoever hosts the lecture to get in - and yet no phone number was provided.Ended up wasting ₽600 on my trip there and back, no way anyone from outside can come and peacefully attend a lecture by a visiting professor.Wish I could get reimbursed for my trip.Expected a lot more from the countys top University.
Kolgomorov is so boring to me!
