Situated on the banks of the river Narmada, this city is an ancient historical town that has existed since 500 BC. The ancient name of this city was Bhrigukachchh. Which was named after Bhrigu. Maharshi Bhrigu sought temporary leave in the area, which was then owned by Lakshmi, and later established an ashram here. Sage Bhrigu never left this place. Even today, the ashram of Bhrigu Rishi is situated on the banks of river Narmada. The city was the most mythical port in the state of Gujarat, known to Arab and Ethiopian merchants. From here trade was done with the states of that time in the west of India. Bharuch traded with South India and Egypt and the Arab states. According to the Narmada Purana in the Reva Khand, the city of Bharuch was inhabited by Bhrigurishi on the banks of the river Narmada on the back of a kurma (turtle) on the fifth day of Maha Sud in Nandan Sanvatsar.According to another belief, the present name Bharuch is derived from the word Broach. In the old days, Bharuch was a very large port. Traders from Arabia and the Gulf countries used to come to trade. The Persians of Iran named this brooch. Missing this spell makes it bur + och. Bur means hill and och means settled - settled on a hill means brooch. Brooch became a corruption of Bharuch. Even today in the old city these high low hills can be seen which are located near the river.
