Magnificent structure 🤩The two houses of legislature of the princely state of Mysore, the legislative assembly and the legislative council, were established in 1881 and 1907 respectively. Sessions of the two houses took place in Mysore (with joint sessions taking place in the Bangalore Town Hall) until Indias independence from British rule on 15 August 1947, when Mysore acceded to India. The states capital was shifted to Bangalore; the two houses moved into Attara Kacheri, a British-built building in Cubbon Park that housed the High Court of Mysore.A need was felt for more spacious quarters for the legislature than Attara Kacheri, and in April 1951, the cabinet of Mysores first chief minister, K. C. Reddy, finalised plans for such a building. The foundation stone of the building was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on 13 July 1951.[5][6][7]The structure was planned to be a two-storeyed building housing the assembly and the council.[6]Kengal Hanumanthaiah succeeded Reddy as Chief Minister after the 1952 election in the state.[8] Calling the existing plan a plain and simple type of American architecture, Hanumanthaiah ordered extensive revisions to produce a work of art in keeping with the tradition of Mysore State. Apart from house chambers, the revised plan included government offices, archives, a library and a banquet hall. Construction of the building was completed in 1956. Hanumanthiah personally supervised and ordered several particular aspects of the construction; one of them was to inscribe Government Work Is Gods Workand its Kannada equivalent on the entablature of the front facade

Situated at Ambedkar Bheedhi, Sampangi Rama Nagar in the heart of Bengaluru, Karnataka, the majestic and imposing Vidhana Soudha is the seat of the Karnataka state legislature. It was built in 1956 for a whopping USD 2,10,000 or roughly Rs 15 crores, back then. Owned by the government of Karnataka, this venerable institution-cum-monument goes up to 46 metres in height, while covering a sprawling 60 acres. The architectural style is often labeled as Neo-Dravidian with strong Mysore design influences. The approximate value of this landmark in Bengaluru is Rs 3,920 crores and 40 lakhs. This calculation takes into account the 60 acres area or roughly 26,13,600 sq ft and the prevailing land rates in the area, which is between Rs 6,000 and Rs 18,000 per sq ft. Taking Rs 15,000 per sq ft as the average price, one reaches this staggering figure although the actual value could be a lot higher, considering the historical, cultural and architectural aspects of the structure. It is, however, difficult to pin down the exact value of the Bangalore Vidhana Soudha. It is a strong symbolic structure, with its heady corridors and imposing arches.Vidhana Soudha constructionThe construction and conception of the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha is held as the achievement of Kengal Hanumanthaiah. Then prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, laid its foundation stone along with the then-chief minister KC Reddy, on July 13, 1951 and its construction was finished in 1956. Hanumanthaiah reportedly wanted this structure to outshine the Athara Kacheri or High Court Building which was constructed by the British. At the time, he was greatly criticised for spending a whopping sum for constructing the building. However, the Vidhana Soudha is today one of Bengaluru’s biggest landmarks for tourists, in addition to being home to the Karnataka state legislature.

Recently I visited Bangalore for sight seeing and one of the Tourist attractions I was shown was Vidhan Soudha. I took the half-day site-seeing tours of KTDC(operated by Karnataka State Govt) and Vidhan Soudha [VS] was listed as one of the places, though we were told that tourists are not allowed at this place due to security reasons and hence we have to just get a glimpse of this place from the bus itself while the bus stops here for some time.**About Vidhana Soudha**: VS is the seat of Karnataka’s Legislative assembly, it is a huge beautiful architectural building, we were told was made of Dravidian architectural style. It is a treat to see such a beautiful construction done at that time.We were told by the Tour guide that the building was completed in 1956 and that it just cost some 1.75 crores at that time *(while I am sure its annual maintenance cost itself will be more than this, in the current era)*.**Vikas Soudha**: The Karnataka government has recently also constructed another building next to VS, called Vikas Soudha. It is an annex building, housing some legislative and other government offices. Between the two buildings is a huge life-size seating statue of Mahatma Gandhi.**Others**: Opposite to VS is the High Court building of Karnataka. Both buildings are near famous Cubbon park. We were told that the VS building gets illuminated on Sundays and public holidays(though we could not personally see them). If you are in Bangalore, spare some time to have a distant look of this place.

For someone with an interest in architecture, Bangalore has some little and a few not so little gems. As architecture reflects the history of a place, I wanted to share some pictures of some buildings that would otherwise be unnoticed (as well as the usual landmarks). The 1950s must have been a renaissance period of Bangalore, for both Government and commerce, as there are some beauties from that era.The Neo Dravidian style of the Vidhana Soudha built in the 1950s incorporates elements of British, European and Asian design into an impressive structure. The motto Government work is Gods work has meaning! This contrasts with the Colonial style of High Court building across the road which looks modest (that was the intention of the grandeur of the Vidhana Soudha to humble something made by the British) by comparison. Similarly, like comparing Bangalore Palace with its Victorian elements to Tipu Sultan Palace which has distinctly moorish touches (from two different era of course!).These are the landmarks but there are a few unique buildings from the 1940-1960s that bring character to Bangalore. Just sharing a few pictures for architecture history buffs! Enjoy!
