Really enjoyed Close Up. Well designed and great detailed booklet for accompanying info instead of posted descriptions allowing for more free roaming and self directed visit. Shame the permanent collection was closed due to new exhibit being put up. Would have been nice to know before visiting.
The close-up exhibition was very interesting! The garden is beautiful.
This is a small but well organized art museum
I think if you have a limited time visiting Basel, then I would not go to this exhibition because it takes about 50 minutes round-trip and it’s not a huge collection, but if you’re a serious collector and you want to see what’s there, then it’s worth going. You can get a full appreciation of the grounds and the collection in less than an hour. There are excellent pieces of art by the masters and I was happy to see the art. What was lacking for me was the lack of a story behind the pieces - no story about the piece itself or why it was desired & collected and I think knowing either of that info even just a small amount of info would have made me feel more connected to the works of art. I do not regret going and I enjoyed what I saw. I recommend going. But I just wanna point out that it’s not so incredible of a collection or with the architecture as the tour books say it is, in my opinion.
We had to take two different trams to the Fondation Beyeler, but it seems easier than getting a cab. This place has one of the best Picasso exhibitions I’ve ever seen!It was beautifully presented and audio guides gave a great insight to each artwork.Outside the compound is also just as beautiful. We some guests sitting on the grass and just enjoying the scenery.
I do not recommend standard exhibition. Not worth 25 chf admission price. But if there is special thematic exhibition , then its different story. So better check the website and know what to expect.Today we were disappointed, thus only 2 stars.
I was very underwhelmed by my visit, the museum is expensive and it wasnt clear to me what message the galleries were trying to communicate - curation seemed a bit scatter shot. The exterior spaces and garden are beautiful, but obtrusive maintenance and ongoing construction means they arent very tranquil right now.
Wonderful. Just to stroll the grounds is so relaxing and incredible. Seeing the huge Calder in the park is worth the trip alone!
Was not only thrilled by the location and building itself but how it’s been managed in though COVID-times: visiting slots might be reserved online in advance - however, there are tickets available on the spot as well if accept a little waiting time (which you might want to enjoy in the restaurant located on location ;-)
World class! Absolutely fantastic works of the masters on permanent display, but I happened to catch “The Young Picasso” and it was absolutely brilliant! Students get a discount, however, if you happen to be a returning student and over 30, you will not receive one. I went during the time of ART Basel (early in the morning before ART Basel opened, which apparently many people also did) and they didn’t ask if I had a ticket for ART Basel when I purchased my ticket. It turns out that one would have received a 50% discount for this. How would they know if they don’t ask? I randomly found out through a friend. (Every cent counts for students—above and below the age of thirty!) Anyway, it was good at what it was for. Make art more accessible NOW so you’ll have patrons when we get older. If we can’t access it now, we will NOT suddenly become aficionados at 70.😉
The building is extraordinary. But Im not sure about the way the exhibition is handled, lets say. A very similar museum in Greece with a collection of various artists, provides a free audio and an app, explaining everything, including the artist, the work, the time it was made. Having that in mind, I was left very disappointed by the curation itself in the Fondation. The ticket is very expensive for just a wandering around. I asked the stuff if there was the leaflet presenting any of this art including the temporary exhibition but they just answered that they dont publish any of these. So I have to say, unless you are an art expert, you should visit only for the building. 😬
Amazing paintings and very nice place overall .
Remarkable collection in an easily accessible facility. Outside grounds are vary pleasant.
Did someone say Picasso Collective? How about Monet? This museum has hosted some of the greatest artwork ever to grace the modern world. This place is a treasure. I’ve seen works of art I thought I would only dream about seeing. Accessible to all with delightful breathtaking architecture overlooking the French and German countryside. If you like art this is on par with the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice.
Amazing art museum in the middle of quiet Riehen with a good cafe and amazing views.
The Beyeler Foundation or Fondation Beyeler with its museum in Riehen, near Basel (Switzerland), owns and oversees the art collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, which features modern and tribal art. The Beyeler Foundation museum includes a space for special exhibitions staged to complement the permanent collection.
The Hopper exhibition was great in terms of the selection of artwork, but it was a shame that the curation was very weak. There was no meaningful information or clear organisation of the spaces to allow a deeper engagement with the artwork or the artist. The written guide was superficial, solely descriptive and lacking any insight, critique or analysis. All of that would have been fine as the art was still wonderful to see, but on top of this the staff at the ticket desk were fantastically rude, unhelpful and unwelcoming. Furthermore, it was sad to note the very poor maintenance (damaged floors and faulty lighting) and tasteless addition of cheap sofas and pot plants to a stunningly designed building.
Ive now been to Fondation Beyeler twice and its amazing. First of all, its free for everyone under the age of 25.Second, the exhibits are just insane. They bring paintings from all over the world, at least they did so for the big Picasso exhibit last year and the current Edward Hopper one.Its easily accessible by tram And the bathrooms are clean. The wardrobe service was free, for my party at least.Maybe the one bad thing are the exhibition texts; they are not as politically attuned as Ive come to expect of a vanguard museum.
Cosy and beautiful. Great place for a picnic. Art exposition as well outstanding.
Whenever I go to this museum, I m very happy to visit. Very nice garden and nice building. Parking lot is not big enough for visiter. Better to go by public transportation especially on the weekend.
The quality of the exhibitions / the environment of the architecture / Staff / park... It all combines in a high class must go/visit.
Beautiful architecture, art and nature and amazing paintings
One of the worlds leading private art collections features changing exhibits. It is located in the outskirts of Basel in an idyllic park.
Peaceful scenery around the museum and very nice lights and display in general. Very close you have the Vitra museum and shop right on the other side of the frontier. Both need to be seen. Basel also is a very nice city.
Very good ambience and pretty moderate Sammlung. It has a few Class Monet pieces but those are the lower end of that specific series. Those who visit museums can make it out easily. This is a conceptual place- with loads of openness , urban gardens , Coworking place, event place and art gallery , cafeteria available within one boundary. I think it’s pretty new institute and they are hosting the exhibitions of 21 century artists - the gallery already have some of the works of those artists in their permanent collection .
Nice setting, excellent exhibition
Doesnt accept Swiss museum pass; staff doesnt speak English
I attended the Baserlitz exhibition. The person at the ticket booth made sure to ask me about every possible reduced rate I might be eligible for.The space is very modern and the exhibit was extremely well curated. Its not cheap though and its somewhat out of the way.
Amazing place, always with wonderful exhibitions!
Peaceful. There is a flower field at the back if you following the wall of the museum
Great space, Edward Hopper -exhibit was nice. Admission price is a bit steep but worth it.
Fantastic place! Love the temporary exhibitions, as well as the permanent collection!
A beautiful museum by Renzo Piano. The contrast between the light roof and the big rock walls is very nice and classy. If you are a student under 26 the entrance is free!
A must
Very nice museum, with covid only a few spaces are open to the public so the visit is pretty quick. Theres a café that does food in the evening.
Amazing Place in an amazing scenery surrounded by sublime Architecture and world class art pieces
Very nice place. A good exhibition of sculpture and drawings by Rodin and Arp, very well curated, including modern dance inspired on it.
I went there for the Gaugin exhibition last year and the Picasso show yesterday. When I attended the exhibition last year I was told that my camera was too professional. I simply removed the flash and that was okay to allow me access with my camera!Yesterday, they wouldnt again allow me to enter with compact camera I was carrying but my Mobile phone (with higher resolution) was allowed. The gallery is airy and bright. Lots of space and places to sit and simply look. The restaurant is classically elegant and the prices a bit steep but worth it as a once in a while treat.
Probably one of the most beautiful museum in the world. Perfection.
Gorgeous grounds with sculpture garden and water elements. Current Picasso-Bacon exhibit is a must-see.
Pleasantly surprised by the collection, especially the Rudolf Stingel exhibition. They have all the big names yet it feels so intimate walking around and not crowded at all.
Insightful exhibition of Alberto Giacometi and Francis Bacon. Giacometi being one of my favourite sculptors, stole the show at the exhibition with his exquisite statues portraying humans in different perspectives.
Excellent art exhibition centre where the landscape of the beautiful garden outside is in dialogue with the collection shown internally of contemporary art or impressionism.
I visited for the Picasso and Rudolf Stingel exhibition. If you’re visiting Basel consider Fondation Beyeler.
A brilliant gallery. Well worth the trip to get there. Ive been told it can be crowded, but I had virtually the whole place to myself.
One of the nicest places to enjoy high quality modern art. They have a special way to present paintings and sculptures that brings out their qualities.
Magnificent location, great Baselitz exposition, highly recommendable !
Who hasnt been needs to go!Fondation Beyeler is a suffisticated, well known art museum that focusses on exhibitions.I went to the Hopper exhibition (2020) and the Rodin&Arp exhibition (2021). You can tell that the organisation team put in a lot of effort to guarantee the visitors an extraordinary experience. The composition of the halls and the art inside is stunning. I would always recommend this to my friends, family and anyone and everybody who is an art-enthusiast. Thank you, Fondation Beyeler!
The Fondation Beyeler is the most selected finest Art Exhibition in Europe the Monet Exhibition is excellent and the 20 years celebration outstanding. ENJOY
Its always a pleasure to visit exhibitions there
Terribly rude staff, poor curation
Love this place, its full of awesome art and many different artists
Best private collection in CH, always amazing temporary. Cant ask for more.
Picasso Blue and Pink period
Probably best privat modern art museum in Europe. :-D
Wonderful place. Very zen
Beautiful exhibition!
An astonishing collection of modern art, at the moment alongside an excellent exhibition of Edward Hopper. All set in stunningly beautiful & calming grounds on the north-eastern edge of Basel. Definitely worth an afternoon of your time.
Unique architecture and atmosphere created by Renzo Piano, great selection of high quality artworks in the collection and blue chips contemporary artists. Organization of interesting musical events in the garden during summer
You have to pay to enter and see nothing because they are under renovation... They say that half is exposed only at the entrance and you end up seeing printed photographies... Its almost robbing... If not for the garden access but not worth the 25 frs entrance fee
Once in a lifetime experience to see Picasso Blue and Rose exhibition.
Fabulous Museum and the Rhodin/Arp exhibition was classic.
Excellent European Highlight - actually world-class
One of my favourite galleries in the world. Great selection of temporary works and fantastic permanent collection. The entire light concept is fascinating, filtering natural light from the ceiling onto the artworks. The Fondation’s gardens are worth a look too, with beautiful details in the water, the Calder in the front garden and the pond with its statue at the back. Discounts are given for students and during the summer, special ‘Sunset’ parties combine electronic music with art, where a party is hosted in the gardens and access to the museum is *free*. Enjoy yourselves!
Special price for students from 25-30 years old, very organized and clean exhibition space but not a big collection.
Superb Picasso exhibition in a great Renzo Piano building.
This is during the covid pandemic... No measures to protect the visitors.
Small collection but high price on ticket
Great art gallery
The best place ever for captivating, beautiful, stunning art exhibitions.
Always an amazing experience
The Picasso exhibition was wonderful
Very interesting! Young people and students enter for free
Outstanding park, architecture and collection!Hopper exhibition - at least over a weekend - a let down. Hopper’s solitary work calls for tranquility. One needs room to maneuvre, quiet, pieceful moments to indulge. That is what the movie of the exhibition tries to convey, that is not possible. Dommage
