Well preserved old terracotta lord Shiva temple. Built by Queen of Natore. Excellent terracotta design on the temple wall.

In the morning our toto drivers took us to Jiagang. We crossed the Bhagirathi River from Devipur ferry ghat to Baronagar. We had to wait for a little. Only one boat engaged to ferry. When we arrived the boat was on the opposite side of the river. After getting sufficient number of passengers including motorbike, cycles the boatman came to our side. We then moved to Baronagar.A number of temples situated on the bank of the river at walking distances.One of the temples is Gangeswar Temple, an interesting piece of temple architecture at Baronagar, also known as Jor Bangla Temple. According to the board fixed at the gate the temple probably built in 1753 AD by Rani Bhabani. It is named as Jor Bangla for the construction of one pair of temple together. The style is of Bengal village hut. The terracotta work exhibiting Bengal’s unique style of surface terracotta art. The pillars and walls between the arches are profusely decorated with animals and human forms. The pillars have details of Krishna Lila  and scenes from Ramayana.There was none when we entered. The door was closed but not locked. Just a little push opened the door. We saw a pair of Shiva Linga was worshipped. The flowers over the top of the Lingas proved for regular worship.The temple is maintained by West Bengal Government.

Gangeswar MandirHow to reach: Nearest Railway station - Azimganj Junction. Take a e-rickshaw from station. They all know this place. Approx RS 20 per person.Or, travel to Jiaganj railway station, take e-rickshaw, tavel to river crossing ferry (sadar ghat). Cross Ganga (bhagirathi) again take e-rickshaw to reach the area.About the place: the place is nice to see old terracotta temple and beautiful village location around the river.This place is maintained by government of West Bengal.Note: avoid carrying and throwing any plastic. Kindly help maintaining the place clean.

The temples were established by Rani Bhabani who was enigmatic & profound women at that era. It is said that there were 107 temples of lord Shiva. The temples are mostly of terracotta & burnt brick work with its architecture typically known as Bengals vernacular architecture. As the temples were mostly situated at the verge of river gangs so with with time its devastated by innandation of gangs & intruders has taken the valuable sculpture of god, by leaving its history only. Now we have to visit this places & government have to take more care of this places to carry forward its remaining history.

Temple of was constructed by Queen Bhavani of Natore (In Bangladesh now) in the year 1755-1760. Rani Bhavani’s terracotta temples is an excellent example of terracotta worked temple over at Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

The temples made by Rani Vabani are the most antique elements of Azimganj, the city Baluchor. Those very temples included Pancharatna, Nabaratna, Triratna. Avove all those are Jorbangla Temples. Here Bangla means the number of the structures made for the temples to build it up. As multiple numbers of stuctures were made and joined to make those temples, these temples are known as Jorbangla. And the wordRatna stands for the smallest temples made in the roof of those Jorbanglas.If its number is five then it will be called Pancharatna temple.At a nut shell those temples are the carrier of the glorious history of Azimganj the retired capital of Murshidabad as well as Bengal in an ancient era.
