Prehistoric rock shelter, Pengawan, District Raisen (M.P.)About 30 kms from Bhopal on Bhopal-Raisen road. Village-Ratanpur falls after landing at Kharbai Ghat. Ratanpur - Chiklod rural road goes on the right side from Ratanpur. About 11 kms on this route. On leaving, the village-pengawan falls. From here on Prime Ministers Rural Road 1 km. After walking, hundreds of small and big rocks are spread all over the forest in the backyard of the village. In these, there are about 60-70 small and big rock shelters on the back side of the school. Some of the rock shelters are being used by the villagers for temples, straw and taming animals. Out of these rock shelters, 25 rock shelters have been identified by District Archeology and Tourism Development Committee, Raisen, but this place is still neither protected nor any development work has been done here. Large quantity of images are clear and in good condition. There are pictures of festivals, hunting, war and various animals. Among them a very important picture – of Chakra-Vyuha designed to surround and kill Abhimanyu in Mahabharata war – is available in a rock shelter. Senior archaeologist Dr. Narayan Vyas tells that a similar picture has also been found in the rock shelters found in Spain. The district administration should take immediate action to save these achievements from being scraped away by smugglers or destroyed by the weather. ( Local Guide )
