A very mixed experience. Bought a June/2020 Hermanns tort, delivered healthy and a decent weight, though the care sheet contained lots of info that is dangerous for Hermanns (more on that later).I can’t give a 5 star review as there are a few catches when buying from this store. These may be captive bred but they are definitely not of UK origin. Our one was a Serbian import (as stated on certificate) so these little guys are from international tortoise farms. Our one is from zoological international a breeder that has a lot of controversy surrounding the way they treat/transport tortoises on a massive scale. The care guide (attached in image) listed foods that are harmful to Hermanns tortoises, so I recommend ignoring the diet section of the care guide stuff and joining specific Facebook/social groups like Hermann’s tortoises UK that have many knowledgeable owners and vets that would gladly give you the correct info and advice.Another thing we noticed is that our one has had immense trouble eating fresh plants, so we had to result to buying pellets. This means that these torts were most likely mainly raised on pellets and unsuitable food that is listed on their provided care sheet. We are keen to avoid giving him most of the food suggested on their care sheet, as they should mainly be given a variety of weeds (many types that should being fed in moderation as part of a varied diet). Most of the food The Tortoise Centre suggests is incredibly bad for them in the long run, as it can cause digestive issues, health problems, and stops them from wanting fresh plants with higher nutritional value. We are slowly weening him off pellet food by mixing it with his fresh plants but it’s still quite frustrating as he will try to only eat the bits of pellets, so we believe they must have been a large part of his diet. The use of hemp bedding was another poor suggestion they gave, as it can cause respiratory infections, and has been known to even injure tortoises and cause infections in many recorded cases. They also suggest using a heated vivarium, which can lead to health issues due to the lack of air flow and high humidity; which is why an open-top tortoise table is the best in the long run and can be cheaply made for a fraction of the price of a vivarium. As a company that claims to have 40 years of experience, it’s shocking to see how they can get so many things wrong. We are happy to be able to give our tortoise a happier life and are doing our best to ensure he is getting the help he needs, but had we known what kind of situation we’d be in we would have looked for a reputable breeder that wasn’t dishing out such poor and ancient advice.Purchase at your own risk, though be aware you’re helping to support a company that grossly mishandles the pets that they claim to take such good care of.
Great place lots of variety and really professional staff, advised us well.
I love this place the pets are healthy especially tortoises. But the horse fieldones used to be £99 now they are £149 why such a difference after a few months.I Hope it goes on sale.
Wanted to shop local instead of the big chain stores, brought my son his hamster and some bits....shame the middle aged brunette lady that served us was stroppy, rude and not very helpful!!! Happy Sunday
Good customer service
Good pet shop for bird food etc nice selection of toys for different pets
Great variety and choices. Could be more welcoming and customer service was fair
We bought our tortoise from here 4 years ago. Literally all the advice we were given was wrong. I am so sad that I have kept my baby in the wrong conditions over the last few years and subsequently he is underweight and has early signs of pyramiding. Please research tortoise care if you choose to buy from here.
Polite staff know their stuff on all animals stocked mice ferrets more small furry animals bird and cages all the stuff you need to look after your pets properly all cages clean no smells perfect.
Brilliant a fantastic place a real pet shop travelled 70 miles well worth it
Great shop but questionable tortoise care. Torts being kept on woodchip and fed beetroot & lettuce which is not good.... Some only a couple of years old but pryimading already 😢😢
