Jainism had its influence in Bengal. Hiuen Tsang states that in Pundravardhana and Samanta, in western and eastern Bengal the naked ascetics called nirgranthas are most numerous. Even now Jains relics, inscriptions, Idols are found in different parts of Bengal. Even the name “Vardhamana” is given to one district in Bengal. In this connection it has been pointed out that the indigenous people of western Bengal known as “SARAKA” are the hindu remnants of early Jain people. Again in some parts of Bengal Jain Idols are worshipped as the idols of hindu deity Bhairava. In short, the influence of Jain religion on customs and manners of Bengal is very much visible even at present. In southern Bankura Jain Cult of Ambika has been completely embressed in hinduism. The goddess holds an important position in the socio cultural life of this region. A number of shrines dedicated to her seem to have sprung up in different places. What is most important is that some places are known by her name, among these the most important is AMBIKANAGAR. This temple is considered to be constructed at 700AD, however having lots of historical importance this place is yet to get tourist importance.

Temple is old and only 3-4 kilometers from Mukutmanipur.Temple opens at 10 AM sharp. The management of Temple has fixed rate for puja process. Instead of regular Dakshina they will demand a calculated cost of puja.

If you are planning for a visit to Mukutmanipur, then this temple should be in your bucket list. An extreme off-bit place, located around 2.0 kilometers outskirts of Mukutmanipur, it serves a prolong history. There is not a temple like structure, it create a lot of hurdles to locate the temple in the evening. There are two lion incarnated door(singh-dwar or সিংহ-দ্বার) in the main entrance. According to the main priest (name: Shri Biswajit Chakraborty), it is a durga temple which is around 700 year old. Its name is devi Ambika and the place is named by this name. Previously it is named as Amai-nagar (আমাই নগর). According to belief, the place had a strong belt of Jainism community. There are several proof of it. Lots of incarnations are there where you can find the Tirthankars. One of the incarnation,we have found near Parasnath temple. Later on somehow they disappeared (Dont know the exact reason).Do visit there & take blessing. I really love this place and recommend everyone to visit there.P.S.- We visited there in the evening. Everyday the Arati has been done at 7.00pm. You can ask the priest for the history.

Ambikanagar was an ancient town and pilgrimage center of the Jains and the remnants of it are still available at a distance of 4 km from the Mukutmanipur dam. Ambika Devi Mandir was built with the patronage of Ambikanagar Rajbari. In the 12th century Jainism received royal patronage from Anantavarman Choda-Ganga-Deva (1078 AD), the Odishan ruler who occupied the entire southwest Bengal up to the river Bhagirathi and created his second kingdom at Ambikanagar. Many temples for the Digambara sect were built in Bankura and Purulia in the 11th and 12 century AD in honour of Lord Parswanatha and Mahavira especially.

An ancient temple of Devi Ambika is there. Temple is average like other village temple. Devi Ambika is famous. Devi has many followers. Local peoples worship Devi with great respect. The old town of Ambikanagar is located at 55 km from the district of Bankura and around 270 km from Kolkata city. This was once a Jain pilgrimage centre, the relics of which are available till date at 4 km away from the lake.Ambikanagar is also famous for its handicrafts made out of grass and bamboo sticks by the tribal people. This place can be easily reached by trains and taxis from Kolkata.
