Fort Shivneri is a must visit for all history lovers. It takes 90 kms or 2 hours drive from Pune, once you reach Narayangaon it is some 19 kms away for the Fort. Fort Shivneri is very popular as it witnesses the birth of the great Maratha King Shivaji Maharaj. The Fort is not difficult to trek as there are steps (proper) prepared and there is an ample place to take rest on the sides. September to December is the ideal time to visit as the environment is really awesome and you will see lot of flowers along the way. You will also see the temple of Goddess Shivai Mata because of whom the King was named as Shivaji. You can choose to take blessings of Mata before you go up or you can visit the temple while getting down. Fort is completely free from littering and one should appreciate the kind of efforts which ASI and Forest Dept has put in to making it happen. The Fort has approximately 800 steps and once you reach the top, the breathtaking view of Junnar City will make you feel fresh. Wind will flow in to your lungs and make you feel rejuvenated. While most of the construction has been destroyed but places like Shivjanmasthan are still there to show the luxury of Maratha Empire. Ambarkhana (Elephant Home) is also there but sadly there is not much of an electricity to see everything. While you reach the farthest end of the mountain, you will be able to see the place where Chatrapati was born. The room is locked but through the doors you can take a look inside. It certainly is a moment of Pride to have seen such places where such great warriors are born. After you have seen the Shivjanmasthan come out and take look at the scenery, wild flowers and breezing wind. Sit on the steps and relax for a while. While on your way down, do not forget to take the blessings of Goddess Shivai Mata. Once you come down, you can have option of having Fresh Lime, Kokum Sharbat or Light Snacks of Bhel etc. The parking is on the roadside and should not charge you more than 30 INR. If you have elderly people along with you then please plan to spend at least 3 to 4 hours for the entire journey. It certainly is a moment of Pride for every Indian to witness such a historical place. I request each one of you to avoid use of any plastic or littering as it spoils the experience of other travelers.Jay Hind, Jay Maharashtra! Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jay!!
Awesome fort and amazing experience to know Shivaji Maharaj was born on this fort. Shivneri fort is well maintained by forest department and Archaeological Survey of India, had a good time walking up in the clouds and if you dont give up you can see this beautiful place. Parking is 30rs and well managed by caretakers who assist you with parking and you can enjoy the climb and be back in roughly 2 hours and if you are younger and athletic built maybe in 1-1.5 hours. Shivneri Fort -Shivneri is a hill fort located to the northern side of Pune district with Junnar at its base and was the birth place of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Even though the fort has succumbed to the ravages brought on by time and weather, its structural style is worth a study. The spot where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born was reconstructed in 1925 and is known as the Shiv Mandir. In its vicinity is a huge circular water tank called Badami Talav. However, it does not hold water any longer. At the far side to the north is a precipitous cliff. This narrow channel is known as the Kadelot Point.

Shivneri is a hill fort having a triangular shape and has its entrance from the South-west side of the hill. Apart from the main gate there is an entrance to the fort from side called locally as the chain gate, where in one has to hold chains to climb up to the fort gate. The fort extends up to 1 mi (1.6 km) with seven spiral well-defended gates. There are mud walls all around the fort. Inside the fort, the major buildings are the prayer hall, a tomb and a mosque. There is an overhanging where executions took place. There are many gates structures protecting this fort. Mana Daravaja is one of the many gates of the fort. Its also called the origin of Tune.At the centre of the fort is a water pond which is called Badami Talav, and to the south of this pond are statues of Jijabai and a young Shiva. In the fort there are two water springs, called Ganges and Yamuna, which have water throughout the year.
Well marked route to the fort. Good parking space. Gives a lot of information and inspiration from history.
The place not less worth than temples and holy places for Maratha Samaj, reason? Simple as that its the place where Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born. The construction of this is very great in its own way. Its the common belief that youll experience an amazing view while standing on the top of the fort.
Shivneri Fort is the birth Place of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Chh Shivaji Maharaj was born on this fort on 19 February 1630. Visited Shivneri fort first time. No sooner we reached the motorable highest point we were asked to pay 50₹ for car parking and park on one side of the road.I didnt go all the way to the top but I went up to the कुलूप दरवाजा.There are many small parks and sitting places developed and those are well maintained also. You should plan the visit on cold day with 4 to 5 hrs minimum to spend.
Its good place to visit in these October November months .clear sky and breeze air if you want to enjoy
Beautiful fort where great maratha warrior Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born. The road leading the fort is as beautiful and challenging as the hike after parking your car. At parking, you might have few stalls of local snacks like vada pao, usal pao, bhajia etc and an icecream truck if you are lucky. The walk to the fort is very interesting. It seems like a 360degrees walk around the mountain and you can view the entire area in 360degrees. In Sep and Oct, there is greenery all around and blooms of wild flower make the scenery colourful.
Good histirical place to visit , need at least 3~4 hoursSun set is beautiful,We couldnt complete full as shortage of timeThe temple close sharp 6 PM

The birth place of Shivaji Maharaj, this Shivneri fort is one of the most important fort in Maharashtra. Amazing architecture, well planned entry gates, wonderful water flow system, you feel the history as you climb this fort. As you reach the top you get to see the beautiful Junnar city with all around cultivation. Right at the top you get to see only the ruins of the fort. From these ruins, one can make out some part of the architecture like several living rooms, hall, escape ways, bath areas, water collection areas etc. Tight at the top, one structure where a Swing has been kept is suppose to be the birth place of Shivaji, though the swing looks like a recent one. Overall it’s a great & a MUST place to visit. A very well maintained fort, requires plenty of purified drinking water stations. The few that exists did not function or water supply was not available. Many aged people had to struggle to get water.A GREAT PLACE AND A MUST VISIT PLACE. DONT MISS THIS.
Beautiful fort. Breathtaking views. Very well maintained. Must visit for all🤟👌✌️👏👍
The fort itself is pretty good. A lot of history related to this place. But if youre a trekking buff then its not the place for you. The government has tried to rebuild all the fallen buildings with historical accuracy to make the place look more intact and attract more tourists, but in my opinion it just made the fort look like a park. The fort is almost in the middle of the town and the road leading to it is very good. Theres stairs all the way to the top, so old folks can climb it too. Only one difficult bit of trek is the one leading to the sakhli wat. All in all a good fort for the amature and people who just want to visit a place for the sake of visiting. Not for the trekkers and not for the history buff.
Its birthplace of shivaji maharaja located in junner which is 104 km away from pune nice place , historic place manage some local group and state government.

Its caves, rock-cut architecture and water system indicate the presence of habitation since 1st century AD. Shivneri got its name as it was under the possession of the Yadavas of Devagiri. This fort was mainly used to guard the old trading route from Desh to the port city of Kalyan. The place passed on to the Bahmani Sultanate after the weakening of Delhi Sultanate during the 15th century and it then passed on to the Ahmadnagar Sultanate in the 16th century. In 1595, a Maratha chief named Maloji Bhonsle, the grandfather of Shivaji Bhosale, was enabled by the Ahmadnagar Sultan, Bahadur Nizam Shah and he gave him Shivneri and Chakan. Shivaji was born at the fort on 19 February 1630 (some accounts place it 1627), and spent his childhood there. Inside the fort is a small temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Shivaji was named. The English traveller Fraze visited the fort in 1673 and found it invincible. According to his accounts the fort was well-stocked to feed thousand families for seven years. The fort came under the control of the British Rule in 1820 after the Third Anglo-Maratha War.

I had been to this place many times and cant get over the feeling that great Maratha king was born here. Its well maintained with gardens on the way. Birth room of Shivaji Maharaj is in good condition. His jhula of 300 plus years old is still in good condition. It feels amazing to be there. Its 45 mins walking up hill the fort. Gives really nice view of mountains and Vadaj dam. Its many parts are demolished by British but remains are still standing strong. Haud (Water tank) of that time are still in good condition. Water there is so cool just like fridge water. Shivai devi temple is situated on the fort. It was closed when i visited for maintenance work.
