Place not maintained well. It is an important monument of Ahmedabad and India but need disciplined management to turn it to a tourism spot. Can leave apart the Worship place, so that it holds it importance as well. Beautiful place. Must visit it but on weekdays (except Fridays)

Like many monuments built during that period, the Sarkhej Roza fused both non-Indian and Indian principles of architecture. While the ringed domes, the profusion of pillars and brackets can be claimed to follow the Islamic west Asian genre (even though they can also be found in Indian architecture itself since much before), much of the ornamentation and motifs have Indian Hindu designs. Most of the buildings do not have arches and depend on pierced stone trellises for stability. In its architecture, Sarkhej Roza is an example of the early Islamic architectural culture of the region, which fused Islamic stylistic influences from Persia with Indian Hindu and Jain features to form a composite Indo-Saracenic architectural style. The mosque, with its courtyard, creates a religious milieu; the royal connection is made through the tombs and palaces; the great tank, platforms and pavilions were used by the common man.The complex is called Acropolis of Ahmedabad, due to 20th century architect Le Corbusiers comparison of this complexs design to the Acropolis of Athens.

Feel Faith, Peace and History… Sarkhej Roja, the jewel of Ahmedabad.A signboard catches attention a midst of heavy traffic on National Highway leading from Ahmedabad to Sanand, “Sarkhej Roja”, clearly visible on the board and as one takes a turn, a raw road with few shops and friendly people around, the monument welcomes you with all its open arms. A visitor’s delight it is. A large praying space and mosque, tombs of queen and king, queen’s palace and extremely huge pond in between all these monuments sends us back in time. Sarkhej Roja committee is taking care of this monument. We reached there on our bike with our visual gears to capture the past in the present. As we stepped to the main gate of the mosque, staff helped us with what are the things to be taken care of during the visit of mosque and other parts of the monument. It is really matter of respect that the staff and local people happily gives us the information about religious rituals to be taken care of during the mosque visit. They shared a certain history too. Built around 1451 AD during Sultan Ahmed Shah’s reign in city of Ahmedabad, this place in suburbs of the city. During those days it was surrounded by Hindu residents who were originally involved in dying clothes. The mausoleum was built in honour of Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh (bestower of wealth), a Sufi saint and a friend/advisor to Sultan Ahmed Shah lived for 111 years, resided at Sarkhej away from Ahmedabad city. Later in 15th century, Sultan Mahmud Begda further constructed the central tank with pavilions around the tank. This place was a place for meditation and resort for royal family during that time. Tombs of Sultan’s son and his queen Rajabai were created posthumously at this spot.First comes ‘Baradari’, a 16 pillared structure in centre of courtyard surrounded by trees. Legend says that Shaikh Ahmed Khattu himself supervised the excavation of lake and construction of Jama masjid. The mausoleum of Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh consists of a big central dome with rows of 13 domes on each side. Care takers help visitors to offer prayers at this place. Exact opposite is tombs of 3 rules of Gujarat – Sultan Mehmud Begda, Sultan Muzafar 2 and Sultan Mehmud 3. These tombs are in between of stone carved jails on the walls. Sunrise to sunset, jails wear a different hue.Jama masjid (total area 4300 sq yards) is just opposite to this monument and has vast praying area, 3 walkways, 5 large domes, 40 smaller domes and 120 pillars; this is much beyond normal human visual field. As we stepped in the mosque with heads covered with our camera device, we could see local people offering prayer and vuju before prayers. It was like entering into peace and serenity away from busy and stressful city life. Our mind just got lost and thoughts slowed down to focus on how to be with one self. Such is the feeling of the prayer hall and corridors. Light peeps in from various directions leaving its shadows on floors and creating various geometry. The play of light and shadows was like some divine light making its impact on the visitor. Echo effect of the prayers at the farthest end of the Masjid is like vibrations of oneself against divine blessings.Coming to the lake (water tank), a scenic water logged body with shadows of monuments and trees around; is at the centre of roza. When filled with water after monsoon it assumes a space of activity for kids and ladies and when empty during summer it’s a cricket ground for street youngsters. On its left is ‘Rani ka Mahel’ with carved windows and walkways made us feel royal while walking through them. This structure paints its shadows on the lake water. As we stand at the foot of the structure, neck gets strained to relish its height against blue skies. The visit went on and on and it was approximate 3 hours to view and photograph the spot. We held our steps back and guided them to return. Sarkhej Roja serves visitors with peace, meditation, architecture, life and importantly feeling of serenity beyond religion and culture...

Although there are many rozas across Gujarat, the Sarkhej Roza is the most revered. Sarkhej was once a prominent centre of Sufi culture in the country, where influential Sufi saint Shaikh Ahmed Ganj Baksh lived. It was on the saints suggestion that Sultan Ahmed Shah set up his capital on the banks of the Sabarmati, a few miles away from Sarkhej.

Sarkhej roja is historical place of mugal samrajya you can feel art and history both get good guide there and feel history also feel deep stone work and life of stone makkers good and nice place just crowded area traffic Horn area .Entering the covered eastern gateway on the north bank of the Sarkhej lake, the building to the right with a handsome stone pavilion in front of it, is the mausoleum of Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Bakhsh. This, the largest of its kind in Gujarat, has along its whole length its sides filled with stone trellis work, and inside, round the tomb, has a beautifully cut open metal screen. Across the courtyard on the left are two mausoleums with a connecting porch, the east mausoleum containing the tombs of Mahmud Begada, and of his son Saltan Muzaffar II, and the west, the tomb of Rajabai, Muzaffars queen. Beyond the Ganj Bakhsh mausoleum is a courtyard, covering more
