Sheesh Mahal is one of the architectural wonders inside the Khas Mahal in Agra Fort. It was commonly used as the Summer Palace by the Mughal princes as it was structured in such a way that it kept the Mahal cool from Agra’s heat. Water devices were installed with fountains and a waterfall inside the Palace. It was originally adorned with the finest glass pieces imported from Syria in order to reflect sunlight into the thick palace walls.

It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a part of summer palace. Its most distinctive feature is glass mosaic work done on its walls and ceiling. These glass pieces have high mirror quality which glittered and twinkled in thousand ways in semi-dark interior. The glass was imported from Haleb of Syria. Shahjahan built glass palace also at Lahore and Delhi, but this is the finest of all.

Shish Mahal, Red Fort, Agra. Its ceilings glitter with countless mirror pieces set into the faceted plaster vaults. The apartment consists of two halls, both with pools set into the floor, linked by a water channel.Shahi Hamam is a small bath next to the Shish Mahal. Though most of its internal marble facings and columns were removed (some to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London), portions of its faceted plaster vaulting remain. Agra, Uttar Pradesh.

Historical place in up-----This was built by the Mughal King Shahjahan as a Summer Palace. It has two tanks with fountains, interconnected by a canal, and a water fall(Abshar). These water-devices were provided to keep it cool and comfortable in the scorching heat of Agra. The distinctive feature of this palace is the glass-mosaic work which has been done, on a wide variety of stucco designs, on all its walls and ceilings.

Be sure to have a knowledgable guideWe were so lucky to have a great guide. Walking through the Fort stopping at the amazing interior Palace rooms was really enhanced by our guide. Having him point out how they carved the marble and then inlaid with the semi-precious stones was great. The combination of the wonderful workmanship and a detailed history of India during this timeframe really enhanced our visit.

The Shish Mahal is so nice and beautiful, its decoration is mind-blowing, I think this the most beautiful one in side the Agra Fort. Now-a-days none can go in inside to see its beauty but you can see from outside through the grilled gate. When you visit the fort please dont forget to see it.

Mostly closed for renovation, only the mirrors on the outside are visible now. Still nice place to take a photo. It is a part of the Agra fort, so you will visit it anyway when you are there. If you are doing the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, a very similar sheesh mahal is present in Amer fort too.

The Shish Mahal is located in the Agra Fort. It is part of the UNESCO Heritage Site.It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as part of the summer palace. Its distinctive feature is the glass mosaic work, on its wall and ceiling. It glittered and twinkled in semi-dark interior. The glass was imported from Haleb of Syria. Shah Jahan built other glass palaces in Lahore and Delhi, but the Shish Mahal is the finest.I actually, could not really see the glass but as I looked closely from outside the gate, then I was able to see the glass as it was dark inside.Other than the walls, I was not able to see much as the place is cordoned of with a locked gate.

Spectacular!!! Absolutely worth a visit. It was pitch dark when we entered with our guide. He lit the candle and bravo-The whole ceiling was sparkling. As we walked the reflection followed us which was mind blowing. Sheesh mahal was a private bathhouse of Mumtaj built by her husband king Shahjahan. It has a hot water pool & a cold pool. It also has a private access to Yamuna river if the queen wishes to go for a dip in natural waters. Go with a guide and pay the guard his (off the records) fees to open the gate. Now that’s your only way in...

Shish Mahal (Turkish Bath). To the north-east corner of the court in the lower storey is situated the illustrious building Shish Mahal (Palace of Mirror) which is so named because of the fine profuse embellishment of mirror on the arches, walls and the ceilings with irregular geometric and floral patterns in thick stucco relief work covering the walls and ceilings. Most of the glass work was missing but were restored by the Agra Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1978-81. This creates a picturesque scene when lighted with candles. It was constructed in 1637 and served as the luxurious bath of Khas Mahal. The bath comprises of two chambers, each about 12 m. by 7 m. The inner chamber has apsidal ends and a marble tank with a fountain and the second chamber has also a similar tank in the east wall. Originally the stucco reliefs were painted artistically with mirror and gold. The floor of the chambers was of white marble. As mentioned in contemporary histories the Emperor used to hold Ghusul-Khana, secret meetings in which only a few selected nobles attended with the permission of the Emperor. The glass mosaic ornamentation was executed in the Khas Mahal complexes of Shah Jahan in Agra Fort. Abdul Hamid particularly mentioned the use of mirror work in the Shah Burj, Hammams, Sard Khana, Garm Khana and the Shish Mahal. He further informs its decoration in the Hammam-i-Shahi, opposite to the hall of the Daulat Khana-i-Khas there is a Hall, adjacent to which is a Hammam consisting of several buildings which overlook the river Jamuna, the garden at the foot of the Jharoka-Darshan and all other gardens on the river side. The artisans have so well executed, on its interior and exterior, inlay relief, glass mosaics and other wonderful works. The arches and the doors of the Hammam having Aleppo glasses added to the beauty of the edifice. The glass work in the Agra Fort has survived in the Shish Mahal and that too, fortunately, on the grandest and the most sumptuous scale. The mural glass ornamentation in its interior (ainabandi) in the words of Abdul Hamid, is undoubtedly the best of its kind in India.
